Year 2080
"Grandpa, what were video games like a long time ago?"

"Pull up a chair, kid. Let me tell you all about it."

The first video game was made in 1962. It was called "Spacewar". 2 ships were controlled by each player. The goal was to shoot the other player's ship and not get sucked into the star in the middle of the screen.
"Wow! That's really old!"

"So when did the companies that made Mario and Sonic release their first consoles?"

Indeed it is! Soon after, from the late 60s to the late 70s, the first at-home video game consoles were released. Some of the major ones were The Brown Box (the first console prototype), the Magnavox Odyssey, and the Atari 2600.

They originated in the mid 80s, but Nintendo started earlier than Sega. In 1985, Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System. This system ran "Super Mario Bros." as well as "Mike Tyson's Punch Out!". In 1987, they released the Gameboy, which ran "Tetris".

When Sega attempted to break into the United States video game market with the Sega Genesis, Nintendo took notice of this and started to compete with Sega. This marked the start of the first major console wars.

"Wait, a war? Did people die in the war over video game consoles?!"
It wasn't that kind of war! It's a term used when talking about multiple popular video game companies competing against each other. The companies would release consoles to hopefully gain more popularity over the other, and it still happens today between companies like Xbox and Playstation.

"Wait, when did Playstation make their first console?"
During the heat of the console war between Nintendo and Sega, Sony released "The Playstation" in 1995. The Playstation's low price, massive game library, and its ability to run 3D games made advertisements catch people's eyes and buy the console.

Nintendo would eventually win the console war over Sega thanks to the release of the Nintendo 64 and the Gameboy Color. From the 2000s to the 2020s, Nintendo released more consoles, like the Gameboy Advance, the Gamecube, the DS, the WII, the 2DS, the 3DS, the WIIU, and the Switch. Those are all the consoles I can remember though, my memory's foggy.
