Once upon a time, there was a little
girl named Waverly Jong. Waverly
was a Chinese-American girl who's
mother came to America from China.
Very early on in her life, Waverly
learns how to play chess from a man
at the park by her house. She gets
very good at chess and wins a lot of
competitions.

Waverly is very smart, with
some people even saying she is
a genius. Her ability to play
chess has made her known as
a child prodigy. Her mother
enjoys Waverly's new found
fame and tends to push her
very hard.

This is a very common problem
today. Parents start pushing their
kids at a very young age, sometimes
as young as 9 or 10, to become a
very good at something. This could
be sports, musical instruments,
acting, etc. This is known as extra
curricular activity child abuse.

One example of this is Michael
Jackson. Michael and the rest of the
Jackson children were pushed by
their father Joe at a very young age
to be the next big thing in music.
This is because Joe always wanted
to be a famous musician and
couldn't.

This constant control affected
Michael a lot, as we can see by the
some of the problems he
developed later on in life. Such as
his abnormal attraction to young
children. These problems stayed
with him until the day that he
died.

Waverly does not like her
mother pushing her this hard
and tends to be stubborn
towards her mother. She is
also very sneaky and this gets
her into some trouble with her
mom.

As Waverly gets older, she
tends to blame a lot of her
problems and shortcomings on
her mother. She also refuses to
take her mother's advice most
of the time.

Waverly and her mother argue a
lot about cultural issues. Most of
their arguments are centered
around the fact that Waverly shows
no interest in acting Chinese. She
also knows very little about being
Chinese which she proves by
asking her mother, "Ma, what is
Chinese torture?" (Tan 91)
