Once upon a time, two NO2 molecules met 

down in the soil of the earth. They both had 

just been on treacherous journeys and were 

excited to tell their stories.

The first NO2 molecule explained to the other, 

"I was struck by lightning! It was a scary 

experience. I used to be a simple nitrogen 

atom, but now I am oxidized! This process 

that had just occurred is nitrogen fixation."

"That is quite frightful,"said the first NO2 

molecule to the other, "but I think that my 

process of becoming NO2 was longer."

"First, I started out as a simple nitrogen atom, 

just like you. I lived in the soil, and one day 

the nitrobacter began. This is the process that 

gave me three more oxygen atoms to become 

nitrate, which is the usable resource for plants 

that allows them to perform metabolic 

services."

"I did not stay in those beautiful plants for 

very long and was quickly consumed by a 

hungry rabbit!"

"Unlike the plant, the rabbit did not need 

nitrate to perform its metabolic processes. I 

was quickly released from the rabbit and was 

changed, yet again, into another molecule: 

NH4."

"I was once again back in the soil, which is my 

favorite place to be. A bunch of other 

molecules were there too. I met up with an 

ammonia molecule. That molecule was pretty 

cool."

"All of a sudden, the nitrosomonas occurred. It 

was super crazy! Nitrosomonas converted the 

ammonia molecule and me, the ammonium 

molecule, into NO2!"

"I am the cyanobacteria and you two must be 

aware that I can take you and bring you back 

into the atmosphere as gas and you will never 

see each other again!"
