Ansel Adams was born and raised in San Francisco,
California. He was an only child and his parents were
wealthy.
Ansel was a very hyper kid and did not do well in
school. By the time he was 12, he had been kicked out
of many schools. Finally, his father decided to keep him
home, tutor Ansel himself and hire other private tutors.
Ansel spent a lot of time exploring around his family’s
home. He lived near the famous Golden Gate Bridge
and loved to climb around on the rocks and bluffs in the
area. It is thought this was probably the beginning of
his life-long fascination with nature.

Ansel as a boy with his mother and father.

When Ansel was 12, he began taking piano
lessons. He became an accomplished pianist.
He began performing and for over a decade,
performing was his primary profession.
Although photography later became an
important part of Ansel's life, piano continued
to be an focus. He was know to spend
summers focusing on photography and winters
focusing on his piano.

When he was 14, Ansel visited Yosemite
National Forest with his family. He was
immediately drawn to the beauty of the valley.
His father bought him an old Kodak Brownie
box camera, his first. His father reported that
Ansel ran around taking pictures in a manner
that reflected his typical hyper-active manner.
Yosemite would become one of Ansel’s favorite
and most well-known subjects

As a young man, Ansel began working at Best
Photography Studio in Yosemite Valley. There
he met the owner’s daughter, Virginia Best.
Virginia shared Ansel’s passion for nature and
the two spent a lot of time hiking together. She
also enjoyed music, being an accomplished
singer.
In 1928, Ansel and Virginia were married. The
couple had two children together, Michael and
Anne.
