There are many values that I appreciate
and enjoy: equality, progress, material
comfort:
Yet, at least to me, I most appreciate my
freedom. In America, all people are
free to do what they want as they want.
Since the beginning of this country, Americans
have been free to speak as they like, to assemble
as they like. They are free to practice religion, or
not practice religion.
We have been free to own guns. We have also
been free to write what we want to write. And
those freedoms are not just because we are
Americans, but because we are people.

Those freedoms are
something not lost on
me. I use those
freedoms, and it is
something I appreciate.

While many other countries now have the same
freedoms, they have not always existed there. And our
world has many other countries and cultures where
those freedoms do not exist. In places like North Korea
and Cuba, brutal dictatorships restrict the freedoms of
its people for many reasons. Those countries do not
have the freedom to express their dissatisfaction with
their lives

Until 1989, many
countries in Europe,
seen to the right, did
not enjoy these
freedoms. In the
Soviet Union and other
Communist countries,
they did not have these
freedoms.

These freedoms are something that I do not take
lightly. I cherish these freedoms on a daily basis. I
think of someone the same age as me living in North
Korea who has no idea what the world is truly
about, and that is sad and pathetic.

I express these freedoms in the
clothes that I wear, in the
words that I use, and in my
actions. These are things many
others do not have. I am free to
live my life how I want to live
it. My freedoms are very
important to me, and I will
cherish those freedoms for the
rest of my life.
