The world changed too quickly for the people to adapt. The future held promise, for
it was an opportunity to grow and prosper. So why did it suddenly erupt in chaos?
The answer was unknown. The citizens of America were left in the shadows,
oblivious to the dangers occurring throughout the globe. Nobody ever expected
loved ones to turn on one another, but it wasn't entirely their doing.

It was an infection. Anyone exposed to the disease was no longer human, now only
a walking corpse that dined on the living. The only way to catch the sickness was by
a bite, which people didn't take seriously at first. It wasn't long before the virus
spread through the entire continent. Everyone was dead, except for two young
survivors.

Walking through the lone streets of New York, Reagan and Jess searched for useful
supplies. An unlikely pair, those two were. They met after the first outbreak in a
safe house along with many other survivors. It was a big group, but over time,
they kept running into trouble that slowly deteriorated their fighting numbers.
Now, it was only the girls left.

Reagan looked around the empty streets, searching for any signs of life among
the rubble. It was quiet, which was a good sign for her. That meant that the
corpses, wherever they may be, were out of reach and it was safe to wander. She
was wiser of the two. Always knowing what routes to take and what plan to
follow through. Jess was younger, more optimistic. She proved her ignorance at
times, but she was good company.

“Let’s check the stores,” said
Reagan, her rifle gripped tight in
hand.
Jess nodded her head and
followed Reagan towards the
small buildings, approaching with
a slow crouch. “Do you think
anything could be in there?” She
whispered.
Reagan shrugged, “I guess
we’ll find out.” Cautiously, she
took one hand off her gun to push
one of the double doors open,
earning a low groan from the
rusty hinges.

Jess stepped up and peered
inside, her heart pounding
against her rib cage. Empty
display shelves were scattered
and pushed over, shattered
glass littering the floor.
"Is it clear?" Reagan asks.
"I think so" Jess replies, boldly
stepping inside. The room was
dark, cob webs blocking the
light coming from the windows.
It was evident that the place
hasn't been attended to in
awhile. Both of the girls
cautiously walked closer to the
shelves.

Reagan slowly walked down each aisle, searching for anything useful. What she
really wanted was something to eat. It took a lot of energy to get to the city, and
they were in desperate need of food. She was starting to believe that this really
could be the end, that there wasn't any chance of survival left for her and Jess.
Everything was slowly falling apart and she couldn't do anything about it, because
she was just one girl against the entire world.

"There's nothing here," she sighed.
Jess groaned from across the room and hugged her stomach. "I'm so hungry,"
she whined.
"I know. Let's keep looking," Reagan said.
"Let's hurry. This place gives me the creeps," said Jess.
Reagan only rolled her eyes and exited the building.

It was starting to get dark outside, so the girls would have to leave soon.
Reagan felt uneasy, like there was something watching her from afar, but she
didn't bother to inform Jess. It would be better to just keep moving. So they
did.
