Soft Rain was a young girl 

living with her family in a 

Cherokee, Tsalagi, village. She 

lives with her dad, mom, 

grandma, and brother Hawk 

Boy.

Today at her school, the 

teacher gave sad news. 

The school had to close 

down because the white 

people were moving in. 

Soft Rain would not be 

able to learn anymore!

Soon after, strange men came 

to their home and took away 

Soft Rain and her mom, 

leaving her brother and dad in 

the fields, and her 

grandmother at home. They 

did not have time to pack, and 

Soft Rain left her favorite doll.

The men did not tell them 

where they were going, 

but made them walk. Soft 

Rain only knew they were 

going West. The west was 

not a good place.

Soft Rain missed her family. She told stories to try 

and remember her grandmother, and looked for 

her dad and brother everywhere. New people 

would come every day into the "pens" they were 

forced into.

On their journey to 

the West, Soft Rain 

had to travel over 

rivers...
