Dedicated to
all the boys and girls who are
ready for Kindergarten

A is for AT THE DOOR,
This is where we will greet you
Whether you take the bus
or your parent drops you off
We're so happy to meet you!

At Our Lady of Victory Catholic
School, the day starts at 8:00 AM. If
you ride the bus, you will enter the
school by the front gym doors. If your
parent drops you off or you walk to
school, you can enter either through
the doors that face the back parking
lot or that are outside the school
office.
Mrs. Samantha Weakland, OLVCS Principal,
holding the door for OLVCS Students

B is for BUS
That many children ride to and from OLV
It is yellow and has a special number
And big windows out of which you can see!

In the afternoon, you will ride the bus home with only students from OLVCS.
Before school starts, the OLVCS office staff will tell your parents the numbers
of buses you will ride each way.

Busing service to OLVCS is
provided by local area school
districts. Before school starts,
the OLVCS office staff will give
your parents your busing
assignment.
In the morning, you will likely
ride the school bus with other
OLVCS students as well as
children who are going to other
area schools.

C is for CLASSROOM
With a table
at which you will sit
Your spot has your name on it
So you won’t get mixed up
one bit!

KB Classroom
KA Classroom

C is also for CATHOLIC. OLVCS
is a Catholic school. This means
that during school, in addition to
learning to read, write, and do
math, you will learn about Jesus
and the Catholic Church.
Students who graduate from
OLVCS are ready to go to a
Catholic high school called Saint
Joseph’s Catholic Academy, in
Boalsburg, PA. In Kindergarten,
you will get to know students from
SJCA because they will come to
help with special events in your
classroom.

D is for your DEDICATED TEACHERS
You wonder what their names will be…
Mrs. Rogan and Mrs. Steyers?
Mrs. Hauser and Mrs. Brignati?
You have to wait until school starts to see!
Mrs. Jessica Hauser
KA Classroom
Mrs. Jennifer Rogan
KB Classroom

Our Lady of Victory Catholic School has two Kindergarten classrooms, KA
and KB. If you are in KA, Mrs. Hauser and Mrs. Brignati will be your
teachers. If you are in KB, Mrs. Rogan and Mrs. Steyers will be your
teachers. All of the teachers are looking forward to helping you learn many
new things in Kindergarten.
Mrs. Sue Steyers

Mrs. Jennifer Brignati
KA Instructional Aide

E is for EVERYTHING
That you bring in your
backpack each day
A pencil, a folder and
sometimes something special
to share
It is fun to wear your backpack
each day!

As a student at Our Lady of Victory
Catholic School, you will need to
have your own backpack. You will
use it to bring things to school and
take your work home each day. You
will hang it on a hook in your
classroom, along with your coat.
Each day you will put your completed
work in your folder to take home in
your backpack. Sometimes you will
also bring notes home to your parent
from the school office or your
teacher.

F is for FIELD TRIPS
That you take with your class and your teacher
You may walk or ride a bus to a new place
To play, watch a show, or learn
about a new creature!

A field trip is a special trip that you take with your Kindergarten friends during a
school day. You will likely go on a field trip to a big auditorium at Penn State to
watch a funny play. On another field trip day, you may also go to a local farm or
environmental center. Your grandma or parent can volunteer to go with your
class and help on the field trip.

G is for GINGERBREAD HOUSE
This you can decorate
with your mom or your dad.
It is an OLVCS Christmas tradition
That makes every Kindergartner glad.

At Christmas time, Kindergartners decorate Gingerbread Houses. Your
parents will be invited to come to school and help you put on the frosting and
candy decorations on your own house. You will get to take your Gingerbread
House home to share with your family and eat!
In Kindergarten, there will be other days that members of your family can come
in for fun activities with you: Thanksgiving Play, Grandparents' Day, OLV Day,
and many more!

H is for HEALTH ROOM
Where the school nurse sits during the day
She is there to help you feel better
So you can go back to the classroom
to learn and play!

The Health Room is right by the Kindergarten classrooms. Some kids think
Mrs. Weakland, the OLVCS principal, sleeps in there. But, that is not true!!
If you have an accident at school, you can go to the Health Room to get a
Bandaid or ice pack to help you feel better. If your tummy feels bad, you
can lay down on the health room bed.

I is for INTERESTING
Books, games, crafts and events
At OLVCS,
you will be having so much fun
learning
You won’t want the school day to
end!

I is also for parent INVOLVEMENT. Your teacher would love to have your parent
come into your classroom to help with Literacy Centers. During Centers, you will do
a learning activity in one area of the classroom for about 10 minutes. Then, your
teacher will tell you to move to another Center to do new activity. You keep moving
from area to area until you do all the fun learning games or crafts.

J is for JESUS
The reason Catholic schools
are around
At OLVCS, you will learn all
about the Son of God
And the Church, which He
asked Peter to found.

Jesus Sacred Heart Statue
in Courtyard

Jesus loved us so much that he died
on the cross, so we can be with Him
heaven. At OLVCS, you will hear
lots of stories about Jesus and his
friends, like Peter and the other
apostles.
You will also do crafts and other fun
activities to help you remember these
stories. In this way, OLVCS hopes
you will grow to love and be more
like Jesus each day.

K is for KINDERGARTNERS...
That probably goes without saying
Boys and girls who are your age
and will be your friends
when you are learning and playing!

Each Kindergarten class will have about 20 children in it. On the first day,
some children may already know a few kids because they went to OLV
Preschool or have brothers and sisters at OLVCS. Other children in
Kindergarten will be completely new to OLVCS. Your teacher will make sure
that by the end of your first day you and all the other children in your class
are friends.

L is for LUNCH CHOICES
Do you want choice 3, 2, or 1?
Each day the lunch program
offers tasty, healthy meals
And making your own choice is lots of fun.

Workers from the State College Area
School District Food Service
Department make lunch for the
students at OLVCS. At lunchtime, you
will go with your class to the lunch
line.

You will get a tray and put your lunch
choice on your tray. You will then take
your tray to a table in the gym and sit
with your Kindergarten friends to eat
your lunch. If you prefer, you can bring
your lunch from home.

M is for MIDDLE SCHOOLERS
Who look really tall
They will help you do crafts and learning games
So be sure to say “Hi” to them in the hall.

At OLVCS, Middle Schoolers are students who are in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.
They wear a uniform that looks a little different from the one that you and the
other Kindergartners wear. Middle Schoolers will come into your classroom
on special days to be your reading partner and do art projects with you.

N is for NOTES
That your parent gives you to bring in
It is important that you give them
to your teacher
Don't throw them out in the trash bin!

Mrs. Cawley, the
OLVCS secretary
collects all the notes.

At OLVCS all Kindergartners have the important job of bringing notes to school
and home about activities happening in Kindergarten and other parts of the
school. Your teacher may also send your mom and dad email messages. Your
teachers will also post important information about Kindergarten on your
classroom’s website.

O is for OUR SPECIALS TEACHERS:
Music, PE, Library, Spanish, Computers,
and Art
These teachers make their classes
so much fun,
That kids say Specials are a school day’s
very best part!

Mrs. Julianna Little
Computer Lab
Mrs. Heather McQuery
Art

Mrs. Julie Swenson
Spanish
Mrs. Sherry Capozzi
Music
Mrs. Susan DeMetrick
Library
Mr. Marty

P is for PRAYING
Which is something you might
already know about
At OLVCS, you will learn
how important prayer is
So in God’s image you can grow both
inside and out!

In Kindergarten, you will learn how to talk to God in your own words. You will
also learn to talk to God using formal prayers.
Some formal prayers you will learn (or might even know already) are the Sign of
the Cross, the Our Father, the Morning Offering, the Hail Mary, and the Guardian
Angel Prayer.
In Kindergarten, you will go to Mass with the rest of the OLVCS students once a
month. Your family is welcome to come to the school Mass with you.

Q is for QUEEN OF HEAVEN
A special name for Mary,
the mother of Jesus
Mary is also called
Our Lady of Victory
Which makes Mary
the OLVCS patroness.
