My Gram Shirley is 82 years old and cannot see
very well anymore.
She has age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
That means her eyes are foggy and they do not
work as well as they used to. There is no cure for
AMD and your vision can get worse.
She wears glasses and uses a magnifying glass to
help her see.
She sees shadows and looking straight ahead is
unclear, but boy can she remember stuff!

Gram used to drive her car everywhere. She loved
to drive to the store, visit her grand children, and see
her friends.
She was happy when she was driving!
Now she can't see to drive, so she has her
memory to remind her of the trips she used to take,
and boy can she remember stuff!

Gram leaves her car in the garage now, just in
case one day she can see again. She is a very
positive and optimistic woman.
Gram is happy just thinking about her car in the
garage. She can remember her driving days.
She loves jokes and says that when her new
boyfriend comes she will take him out for a drive
in her car. She doesn't even have a boyfriend.
My gram is funny.

Gram gets upset when she can't see the picture on
the wall of her and Grampa. She misses him, but
feels his spirit everyday. We will move the picture
closer so she knows it is there.
Her memory is so sharp she knows exactly where
everything is in the room.
The little blue fairy on the mantle reminds gram of
her husband's sister who died when she was 16
years old. She loves to go over and touch it. She
can tell you exactly what it looks like just by feeling
it. This makes her feel good.

Gram has a personal support worker
named Sue and she helps gram with meals,
household chores, and goes for walks with her.
She is a good friend and gram feels comfortable
having her around.
Sue is from the Philippines and is learning to
speak English. Gram helps Sue with new words
and it makes her feel good to help someone else.
Gram says all you need is love, and she gives and
receives it.
