Matt the bat was
excited for his first
day of school. He
packed his pencils and
paper into his new
backpack and flew to
class.
Before Matt entered
the classroom, his
classmates were
loudly talking to one
another, but when
Matt opened the
classroom door,
everyone became
silent and stared at
him.

“Who is the weird person
in the door? He looks like
a rat with wings,” said
Sam the skunk. All the
animals laughed.
Mr. Owl walked in the
classroom and asked the
students to sit in their
seats. As Matt tried to
sit in a front-row seat,
Robby the raccoon
jumped in front of him
and said, “This is my seat,
so find your own.”
Matt, saddened by his
classmates’ teasing, sat
down in a seat of the
back row.

“Let’s all
introduce
ourselves,” said
Mr. Owl.
“When I call
your name,
please tell the
class something
you enjoy
doing.”

Bess the bear
said,
“I like eating
honey."
Dina the duck
said, “I like
playing in
puddles and
ponds.”

When it was
Matt’s turn to
talk, he looked up
and said, “At
night, when most
of the animals are
asleep, I like to
fly high in the sky.
Then, I let myself
fall in the air, and
before I hit the
ground, I swoop
up. It’s the best
feeling in the
world.”

“That sounds
weird,” said
Robby the
raccoon.
“I don’t believe
you,” said Sam
the skunk. “You
said that you
did this at
night, but you
can’t see and
fly at night. No
one can.”

Mr. Owl
interrupted and
said, “Sammy,
even though you
can’t do it, others
can. We all have
special talents.
Now, since
everyone has
introduced
themselves, let’s
pass out your new
books.”

At lunch
none of his
classmates
sat with
Matt, and no
one played
with him at
recess.

When Matt
returned home,
he told his
parents about his
day.
“Your classmates
don’t sound very
nice,” said Matt’s
father.
“Maybe they just
need to know you
better,” said his
mother.

Matt listened to
his mother and
tried to talk to his
classmates the
next day, but they
continued to
ignore him.
After recess, it
was nap-time. As
the other young
animals lied on the
ground, Matt flew
up to the ceiling
and tried to sleep
upside-down.

Sam the skunk
opened his eyes
and saw Matt
hanging from
the ceiling.
“What is that
crazy bat doing
now?” he
exclaimed.
“He’s even
weirder than I
thought.”

When Matt
came to school
the next day,
he saw a big
web that Sid
the spider had
made. Inside
the web were
big letters
that spelled,
“No bats
allowed.”

Matt thought
about flying
home, but
instead, he
flew into his
classroom
and laid his
head on his
desk.

When Mr. Owl
entered the
classroom, he
picked up a piece
of chalk and
wrote the word
“weird.”
“Hello, students.
I want to start
class this morning
by talking about
the meaning of
this word. What
do you think this
word means?”

“It means
crazy, like
Matt!”
shouted Sam.
“Sam, could
weird be
another word
for unique?”
asked Mr. Owl.

“I guess,”
said Sam.
“And does
unique always
mean
something
bad?” asked
Mr. Owl.
“Aren’t you
unique?”
