There are three main types of rocks: igneous,
sedimentary, and metamorphic. Each of these
rocks are formed in a different way.We call this
process the Rock Cycle.

There are places on Earth that are so hot they melt
rocks. Just like warm air the hot magma rises and cools
down. When it cools and hardens it has formed an
igneous rock.

Any rock that has been exposed to Earth's
surface can become a sedimentary rock.
Because of being exposed to the elements the
rocks can break down to form sediments which
form sedimentary rocks.

Any rock has the potential to become a
metamorphic rock. If the rock is buried deep
within the Earth all of the heat and pressure
would soften the rock and crush it. That would
turn it into a Metamorphic rock.

Wind and water can break down an igneous
rock. The tiny particles of the broken can get
washed down stream. If the stream dries out
the little pieces of rock called sediments could
get stuck.

Once the sediment is stuck they start to stick
together. After a very, very long time the
sediments start to harden. They will eventually
turn into sedimentary rocks.

If a sedimentary rock is buried deep enough it
will start to change. The high pressure and heat
will not melt the rock but it will squeeze the
rock. The rock will change into a metamorphic
rock.

If the metamorphic rock does get to hot it will
melt. The rock will turn into magma. If the
magma cools and hardens it will have formed
an igneous rock.

The rock cycle basically recycles rocks. All types
of rocks are constantly changing. No one rock
will stay the same forever.
