Aa
Ladybugs (also known as lady beetles, or
lady birds) are small, oval-shaped winged
insects. They usually have red or black spots.
As ladybugs age, the color of their spots
fade.
2

Bb
Birds are the ladybug's most common predator.

Cc
The ladybug goes through a complete
metamorphosis of four stages throughout its life.

Dd
Its diet includes, eating smaller insects called
aphids.

Ee
The first stage of the ladybug cycle is the egg-
embryonic stage. The ladybug's eggs look similar to
yellow jellybeans.

Ff
The female ladybugs lay their eggs underneath
leaves to protect them from predators and bad
weather.

Gg
You can usually find ladybugs in gardens,
grasslands, fields, and sometimes in other people's
houses.

Hh
The female ladybug will lay a cluster of 10-50
eggs on a plant with suitable prey for her
offspring to eat when they hatch.

Ii
Scientists believe ladybugs lay both fertile and
infertile eggs in the cluster.

Jj
You may see ladybugs in the month of July because
they are typically found in the spring and early
summer months.

Kk
Ladybug larvae look somewhat like tiny alligators,
with elongate bodies and bumpy exoskeletons.

Ll
In the larval stage, larva eat dozens of aphids
per day.

Mm
The newly hatched larva will feed until it grows too big
for its cuticle. At which time it will molt.

Nn
Ladybug larvae usually molt through four instars, or
larval stages, before preparing to pupate.

Oo
The larva will attach itself to a leaf or other surface
when it is ready to pupate.

Pp
In its pupal stage, the ladybug is usually yellow or
orange with black markings.

If you are not quiet when approaching a
ladybug, you will startle the ladybug and their
knees will bleed. This causes them to release a
foul smelling yellow substance.

Rr
The ladybug's body undergoes a remarkable
transformation, directed by special cells called
histoblasts.
