Butterflies are colorful for many reasons. The
colors help them attract a mate and absorb
heat

Butterflies change four times during their
lives in a process which is called
metamorphosis. They are born as an egg.

Next they turn into a caterpillar, or larvae.
This caterpillar will eat constantly- it loves
leaves and flowers.

Butterflies can live anywhere from two
days to eleven months.

Scientist estimate that there are 28,000
species of butterflies throughout the world.

The fastest butterfly can fly but only up to
30 miles per hour.

Butterflies have a long, flexible , tube like
tongue that goes down into the nectar of
the flower.

Butterflies have three body parts, like all
other insects: The head, the thorax, and
the abdomen.

Butterflies are insects, but large scaly wings
set them apart. These wings allow them to fly
but only when their body temperature is above
86 degrees.

The joy a butterfly imparts awakens wonder in
our hearts

The Karner Blue Butterfly is a small, blue
butterfly that has a wingspan of about 1 inch
(2.5 cm).

Female butterflies are usually larger than the
males, and the live longer.

Many believe butterflies got their name
because they would fly around the buckets of
milk on farms. While the milk was being
churned into butter, many noticed these flying
insects would appear and soon they were
being called butterflies.

Most butterflies live on the nectar and pollen
from flowers.

Butterflies have three pairs of legs. Their feet
have little claws to help them stand on
flowers.

Some butterflies, like the peacock, only use
four of their legs, carrying the two front legs
against their bodies.

Butterfly fly quietly in the air.

Most butterflies are found in tropical
rainforests, but they can live in all climates
and altitudes of the world.

There are about 24,000 species of butterflies.
The moths are even more numerous: about
140,000 species of them were counted all over
the world.

The wings of the butterfly are made of hard
tubes covered with thin tissue. The wings are
covered with scales, which are like a fine dust.
