Rory was the youngest caterpillar of her siblings and friends.





She dreamt of the day she would
turn into a beautiful butterfly and be able to keep up
with all of them as they played.














Rory tried her best to play games
with the older caterpillars, but she
could barely hold the stick, and the
seed was bigger than her face. It
really hurt when they wiggled over
her or accidentally hit her with
their sticks.



Rory knew she was right,
but she wanted to play so badly!




She squirmed her way home after each game, wincing and whining as
she went, knowing that her mom would be upset with her for playing
sticks and seeds again.

Rory had always wanted a pet. One day, she found a
small aphid chewing on a leaf. She thought it would be
perfect because it was small like she is. She lured it
home, prepared to convince her mom to let her keep it.











Even though everyone else had pets and Rory promised to
take care of the aphid, her mom said no.

The very next morning, Rory followed her older friends to
The Falls. Rory knew The Falls was not a safe place for such
a young caterpillar and that her mom wouldn't approve of
her being there. She quickly fell behind her friends.





Rory wandered home feeling sad and alone.
















was going to try and eat as much as she could, to grow
bigger like her family and friends. She ate and ate
until she could not eat another bite.



Rory felt sick the next day, and even worse...
She was still the smallest caterpillar.
