When Dawn was going to college at the University of Florida,
she had to do an internship to get a dairy science degree.
They then asked her, since she had to do that requirement,
that if she would be willing to go to a dairy in Milbank, South
Dakota.

She said yes, and she was on her way to a new life far away
where she began to work at Schenck Dairy. She soon realized
that this was a dreary, gloomy dairy.

She also realized that they rented out the same veterinarian
every week. They wanted Dawn to work with him as his record
keeper who records if the cow is pregnant or not. The instant
she saw him, she was awestruck with God’s voice telling her
that she would marry him. His name was Todd.

Although Dawn is very talkative--God’s voice of telling her
that she was going to get married to this guy scared her so
much. This made her refuse to talk to him for two weeks.
This went on until Todd asked Dawn, “What do your parents
think of you being in Milbank?”
Then she was forced to tell him about her life story, and how
she only had a mom. While her step dad had been a
veterinarian, he had died from cancer. She told him that her
Mom was taking care of her daughter, Ali, although she had
never been married.

After a long, terrible month of laboring at Schenck Dairy,
Dawn was sick and tired of living out in a unexciting corn
field, going without a car, and not knowing absolutely anyone
there. So she pleaded for Todd to take her on a date, so she
could get out of a house, where she had nothing to do. Plus,
she knew that Todd was the one for her even though she did
not want to admit it.
The first date they went out on, Dawn asked. That meant
once they got to the Hilltop Cafe in Ortonville, Minnesota,
Dawn had to pay. The major predicament with that is she did
not have an ample amount of money, and since she was just
interning, she only got paid a measly $2.50 an hour.

Then when Todd ordered pork chops, which is very
expensive, she was forced to order a salad. This left her with
no money. Although to this day, Dawn says it was the best
money she ever spent.

The dismal Schenck Dairy started to go downhill rapidly. They
asked Dawn if she would like to leave, but she had not
finished her lengthy internship yet. So she took a job at a
smelly dairy in Morris, Minnesota. It was called Riverview
Dairy, and it was only an hour away from Milbank. This
allowed Todd and Dawn to continue to date. When the
summer was over her internship was up, but luckily Riverview
Dairy had offered her a job.
