A peering face emerges from the tent.
The burning flames spit angrily like an
agitated cobra. Long dark hair flies in
the wind. An eerie glow dances through
the air. Silence lingers around. Francis
lights her smoky cigarette and trots
along the isolated lane. Crackling leaves
break in harmony with the spitting fire.
The rest of the world is silent.
The campsite becomes a distant shadow as the
figure approaches the bottomless pit of water.
She strolls along the isolated bridge,
weathered like an old man’s face. The stars
glare down on her. Two long legs step in to the
wooden canoe. The oars splash through the
pristine water. Minutes swim past as the canoe
stops. Francis Relaxes.
Content as a purring cat Francis lifts her
pen and lets the ink sprint along the
page of her diary. Underneath the boat
a prickly body brushes against the
wooden planks. KNOCK! KNOCK!
Sweat drips down her forehead and
splats the page. Shaking like a speaker,
she nervously peers over the edge of
the boat but all she sees is a black abyss
of darkness that is the lake. She
contently lay down again. Minutes fly by
as she stares up at the moonlit sky.
KNOCK!
KNOCK!
Her eyes leap open as she fumbles around for
the oars. She rows in a desperate panic, she
doesn’t move. Her heart sinks to the deepest
depths of her stomach. nervous worries flow
through her mind as she flutters her eyelids
and lay down. Silence replaces her beating
heart.
Minutes seem like hours as Francis lay awake,
ears pricked up alert for the sound. Her mind
reassures her nervous body, just as she calms
down…
KNOCK! KNOCK! The boat vibrates as
Francis flies into the air, plummeting
back into the boat she starts to
hyperventilate. Fat tears roll down her
face. She buries her head in her knees,
longing for the safety of her tent.
Flashbacks of childhood monsters race
through her aching head. One memory
sticks in her mind, her brother smirking
as he tells her about the lake-snake a
horrific sea monster who roams the
lakes…
