nickname of Hawaii, the "Aloha State."

A.a.

Is for Bungalows homes hoisted above the water on
sturdy pillars it sits on large platforms. While the
bungalows might look primitive from the outside, they're
usually quite luxurious inside. Often times, they contain
a glass floor so you can look at the water and its sea life
below.
B.b.

C.c.

Typically warm and sunny throughout the year,
winter months are wetter, and sometimes stormier, but
rainbows quickly follow the rains.

D.d.

Hula dancing is the traditional art of movement, smooth bodily
gestures and vocals. You may notice that Hula Dancing seems
to have an incredibly smooth "flow" and the movements are
extremely fluid. These movements are said to actually tell a
story or represent movements of nature such as trees blowing
in the wind or fish swimming smoothly in the ocean.

E.e.

Under-sea volcanoes that erupted thousands of years ago
formed the islands of Hawaii.

F.f.

Hawaii was once an independent kingdom. (1810 -
1893) The flag was designed at the request of King
Kamehameha I. It has eight stripes of white, red and
blue that represents the eight main islands. The flag
of Great Britain is emblazoned in the upper left corner
to honor Hawaii's friendship with the British.

G.g.

Hawaii designated black coral as the official state gem in
1987. Black corals are animals that live in colonies up to 6
feet high (1.8 meters), though individual polyps may be
less than .04 inches (1 mm) in diameter. Polyps are
cylindrical with six non-retractable tentacles armed with
stinging cells.

H. h.

Honolulu, on Oahu’s south shore, is capital of
Hawaii, and gateway to the U.S. island chain.

I.i.

The ‘Ilima is an indigenous plant related to hibiscus. Habitats
include rocky or sandy coasts, lava fields, mesic forests, and
low wet forests from sea level up to 6500 feet. It is a shrub
with grayish-green, heart-shaped leaves. The flowers are
solitary and yellowish-orange. ‘Ilima is used for making
medicine (for pregnant women and asthmatic children) and
leis with the flowers

J.j.

In 1887, in celebration of her Golden Jubilee commemorating her fifty-year
reign, Queen Victoria presented Hawaii’s Princess Lili’uokalani with a solid
gold bracelet. According to English fashion, her name was engraved in old
English lettering and enameled in black. The bracelet became one of
Lili’uokalani’s most treasured pieces. Most Hawaiian Heirloom jewelry is
made by hand-engraving.

K.k.

King Kamehameha the Great (c. 1758–1819; r.
1792–1819) controlled the Big Island of Hawaii,
captured Maui and Molokai and set his eyes on Oahu.

L. l.

The state of Hawaii consists of eight main islands:
Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe
and the Big Island of Hawaii.

M.m.

12 major mountain peaks of the
Hawaiian Islands and the U.S. State
of Hawaii.

N.n.

Its only natural resources are its climate, soil, vegetation,
groundwater supply, and surrounding ocean. Hawaii's fertile
soil is composed of lava ash and soft, sandy stone. Because of
the mild climate and fertile soil, the crop year never ends. The
most abundant minerals are stone, cement, and sand and
gravel.

O.o.

Oahu is an island in the mid-Pacific,
part of the Hawaiian island chain and
home to the state capital, Honolulu.

P.p.

Hawaii has the largest multiracial
population of any U.S. state. In the
2000 census, 21.4% of Hawaiians
selected two or more races to
identify themselves.
