It was the hardest day of the week, Tuesday. Tuesdays 

were the worst. 

Timmy and his class were bored out of their minds.

Suddenly, their teacher, Mrs. Sneed made an 

announcement. 

     "Attention Class! Tomorrow is Show and Tell! Bring 

your favorite pet to school, and show it to the class!" 

The class cheered! Then the bell rang, sending them to 

recess.  

Little Timmy ran outside for recess, and heard his friends talking 

about tomorrow's show and tell. 

    "My Kitten is the best pet!" exclaimed Susie, "She's so soft!" 

    "Oh yeah, My Puppy can play fetch!" said Frankie. 

    "Well my Iguana could eat both of your pets" Jamie spoke 

quietly. 

   "What about you, timmy?" they all asked. 

  " My pet is cooler than all of yours!" he shouted.

 But timmy was sad. He had no pets. 

After a long day of school, Timmy ran home, still sad. 

    "DADDY!!! I'M A LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE!!!" Timmy 

wailed. "I told my friends that I would bring the coolest pet ever to 

show and tell, but I don't even have a pet!"

    " Hm. Don't worry son. I've got just the thing," Timmy's dad said. 

Timmy opened his hands, and his dad placed something in them. It was 

a bowl with a little red fish swimming inside. 

    "His name is Renaldo. Isn't he cute? Now watch this" Timmy's dad 

said. He turned off the lights, and held a little purple light by the 

fishbowl. Timmy's fish started glowing! Timmy was shocked!

    "Wow! How does he do that?" Timmy asked. 

    "Renaldo is a Glofish. He glows in UV light. (That's the light I held 

by his bowl)," Timmy's dad explained. Timmy was fascinated. 

    "Where did you catch him?" Timmy asked. His dad smiled. 

    "I didn't catch him. I made him! and I'm going to show you how". 

Timmy's dad took Timmy and Renaldo to Yorktown Technologies, the 

company where he worked. He started speaking.

    "This is where your GloFish was born, Timmy. In fact, this company 

was started in 2001 so that we could create Genetically Modified fish 

that glow". Timmy was confused. 

    "What does Genetically Modified mean?" he asked. 

    "It means we make changes to the fish's DNA. Do you know what 

DNA is?"

    "Yes," Timmy answered. " DNA is like a secret code that tells your 

body what to look like, and what to do".

    "Good!" his dad said. " Each section of DNA that tells your body to 

do something different is called a Gene. You have a gene for brown 

hair, Timmy, and a gene for brown eyes,"

    " And a gene for a big brain?" Timmy asked.   His dad laughed. 

    " Yes. That too," he said. "Every living thing has genes. and humans 

have figured out how to change those genes".
