In a small farm town there is a girl named Fern...
You may remember her from Charlotte's Web,
where she rescued Wilbur and cared for him until
he was old enough to go to a real farm. Fern's
compassion and caring nature lead to her to
become a nurse, and now Fern is back in school to
get her doctorate degree at The University of
Arizona!

Fern spends most her time studying and
reading for school. Needing a change of
scenery, she often comes out to the pig pen
and reads with the animals.

One day Fern was given an assignment for
her Nursing Theory Class. She was asked to
explore and identify with one of the various
philosophies she studying and boy was she
lost!
As she listened to Fern read, Charlotte soon
realized that Fern was probably going to
cover Critical Realism for her project and
she wanted to help.

The next day Fern returned to the
pig pen to continue her reading. She
found a web that Charlotte had
spun.
The web had writing it in. It said the
word Ontology. Fern thought
carefully about the word and about
her readings. She soon realized that
Charlotte had listed Ontology as one
of the tenets of Critical Realism,
trying to help her with her project.

Fern recalled from her reading that
Ontology is the study of being. She also
remembered that in critical realism,
perceptions and experiences paired
with events we experience help to
form values and norms (Reed, 2105).

The next day as Fern returned to the pen, she found that
Charlotte had left her the word Observe.
She thought to herself, "Well there is so much that I
observe here on the farm. I can see the birds flying, the
cows eating grass, and Wilbur rolling in the mud. What
does this have to do with nursing philosophy?" Then she
remembered "Pam's Notes".
Observation was in what she could see with her eyes, what
she couldn't see with her eyes, and how those things she
had seen or not seen had caused things to occur.
Just like Charlotte's web. She could see the web but how
did it get there, how did Charlotte know the
words she needed to understand?

Fern awakened the next morning trying to sort
her previous night's dreams. She could only
recall strange scenes of different weather
patterns.... rain, thunder, lightening, bright
sunshine, cloudiness, cool fall weather and of
course beautiful white snow!
This was all so puzzling to her. With all of the
work she had to do for her theory class, (not
to mention her other courses), she certainly
did not need another concept or process to
"figure out"!

She headed to her favorite spot under
a tree to reading for class. As she
passed by Charlotte's web, she
observed another word, STABLE, had
been perfectly spun. As Fern
continued reading, she came across
the third tenet of Critical Realism,
which she summarized as stability.

Fern began to make a
connection about her dream.....
stability! She was amazed as
she began to realize that in
spite of how the weather varies
and seasons change, that hings
on the farm were incredibly
stable! Year after year, season
after season, even the ants,
mice, butterflies, squirrels and
grasshoppers still populated
this wonderful place!!!

The reality of the farm having its own
level of organization and inner-
connectedness gave Fern an entire new
perspective. She loved this place! Fern
gained an entire new level of
appreciation for Dr. Reed's "Pam
Notes"! Fern's day had ended on such a
positive note, she looked forward to
what she would find tomorrow.

Excitement and joy filled Fern's spirit as she headed
to the farm to work on more of her assignments for
school. Of course she wondered, "What will I find
in CHarlotte's web today?"
Finding the word "REALITY" left her quite
bewildered. As she pondered this word, Fern took a
long hard look at Charlotte's web, and thought
about what caused it to appear so intricate, detailed
and yet so beautiful, and real!! She concluded, that
only Charlotte could experience doing this as a
spider- that was Charlotte's reality.
