The Habitat
Alphabet Book
Written and Illustrated by:
Heather Graf

The arctic tundra is a treeless land which covers
20% of the Earth's surface. The ground is always
covered with snow or ice and is usually
very cold.

Many animals live
underground in burrows. Some
animals spend their entire
lives in burrows, others
spend only a portion of their
lives in them. Burrows
protect animals from
predators and extreme
temperatures.

Coral reefs are warm, clear, shallow ocean
habitats that are rich with life. The coral
provides shelter for many different animals.
The Great Barrier Reef off the coast of
Australia is the largest coral reef in
the world.

Deserts are usually very, very dry. The
extreme heat and extreme dryness makes
it a very harsh environment. Not many
plants or animals can
survive in deserts because the
lack of water needed to
survive.

An animal or plant is considered endangered
when there are so few left alive in the wild
that the entire species is in danger of vanishing
forever, or becoming extinct.
Unfortunately, many animals are endangered
due to hunting and deforestation.

Farmland is not a natural environment but
it is a very important one. The man-made
fields are used for grazing, sowing and
harvesting and have been since the stone
ages. Many plants and animals are raised
here although they are usually used for
human consumption.

Grasses are the most plentiful plant
in grasslands which is why it got its
name! Trees and shrubs are rarely found in
grasslands but they are known for having some of
the darkest, richest soils in the world.

A habitat is a place where a plant or animal
lives. Different animals need different
habitats and each habitat fits the animals
living in its needs perfectly. A fish needs
water to live in, but a grasshopper needs a
big space to hop around and plenty of leaves to
eat.

Some habitats experience extreme heat.
This is true for many deserts and also
many African countries. Many
animals cannot survive such
intense heat and the heat waves that
come along with it.
Elephants thick skin helps
them adapt to the
hot weather.

The Jurassic Period
was the age of the
dinosaurs. It began around 206
million years ago. All of the plants
and animals that lived during that
time
are now extinct and cannot be found
in the wild anymore.

The Florida Keys offer a range
of habitats, providing homes to
a wide variety of animals.
Large sea grass meadows
support an array of
marine life.

Caves are home to many
animals. These animals are adapted to life
in the dark and many cannot
see at all. Some animals cannot survive
outside of the cave but others live in the
cave but venture out of the cave also. There
are three
different levels of the cave: the entrance
zone, the
twilight zone and
the dark zone.

On a mountain, the weather and
the organisms that live there change often as
the elevation increases.
As temperatures get
colder, tree species
change and then eventually disappear
all together. At the top there is
usually nothing but snow and ice.

The North Pole is the most
northernmost
place on Earth. It is at the very top
of the
globe. There is no land at the North
Pole but
it is covered in a thick layer
of ice around 6 to 9 feet
thick.

The ocean habitat is the largest
habitat in the world. It covers about 70% of
the Earth. The five main oceans are the
Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and
Southern. Oceans are usually very salty
and home to a vast variety
of organisms.

A plateau is a flat elevated land form
that rises sharply above the
surrounding area. A plateau can be
formed by a volcano. Many mammals
as well as insects and reptiles can
make plateaus their homes.

The equator is an imaginary circle around
the Earth which divides it into two equal
parts: the Northern Hemisphere and the
Southern Hemisphere. It runs east and
west between the North and South poles.
It is always very hot at the equator.

Tropical rainforests are
forests
with tall trees, warm
climates and lots of rain.
Rainforests are home to more
than 50 percent of the plants and
animals on Earth.

A swamp is an area of land
that is permanently filled with
water. Many swamps are even covered with
water. Swamps have a lot of trees and can
exist in many kinds of climates and on
every continent except Antarctica.

Tide pools are located in between high
and low tides. Plants and animals
living here have
to be able to survive a long time
out of water, and also a long time
in the water as the tides move in
and out throughout each day.
