One day as Maria came home from ballet practice, she
saw a spot on her arm. She never saw this spot before.
When she got home, she asked her dad what it might
be.
"I don't know honey" Maria's dad said. "Let's see what
happens with the spot when we wait a little."
So Maria waited and watched the spot to make sure it
didn't change color, shape, or size.

Maria waited for a little while before noticing that the spot got
bigger! Maria knew that the spot wasn't supposed to be there,
and she knew it wasn't supposed to get bigger!
So Maria told her dad about the spot growing. The dad then
called the doctor's and made an appointment.

So Maria and her dad went to the doctor's office to see why
the spot on Maria's arm grew bigger.

When Maria met with the doctor, the doctor checked Maria's spot.
Once the doctor looked at the spot, Maria had to wait while the doctor did
some tests.
It seemed like a really long time before the doctor came back. "Hello,
Maria" the doctor said softly, "I'm afraid I don't have great news." Maria
was nervous now. "You have a type of skin cancer, Melanoma."
Maria asked what Melanoma was.
The doctor responded, "Melanoma is a really bad sickness that develops
under the skin"
"Have you spent a lot of time in the sun, Maria?" asked the doctor.
"Yeah she spends everyday outside" replied Maria's dad.
"Do you wear sunscreen?" questioned the doctor.
"Nope, I never wear sunscreen" answered Maria.
"Well that is the problem Maria, melanoma comes from too much sun
exposure" the doctor said, "the rays from the sun causes DNA, this is what
makes you as a person, damage to skin cells" Maria was still confused. So
the doctor decided to show drawings of how skin cancer is formed.
