Lets take a trip to Saudi Arabia and see what life is
like for adolescents there!

Muhammad is an early adolescent
from Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is
about 7,250 miles from the United
States. Saudi Arabia's climate is
mostly desert. There is very high
temperatures during the day, and very
low temperatures at night. Also, there
is very little rain.
Meet Muhammad!

Family Life
In Muhammad's home he lives with
his father, mother, and sister. They
do not have any pets. Also, they
have a housekeeper who comes over
to help keep up with household
chores such as cleaning and cooking.
Neither Muhammad or his sister,
Amani, who is also a young
adolescent, have much experience
cooking meals at this age. The
family sits down every night and has
dinner together because
Muhammad's parents do not have to
work late. This is a time the whole
family gets together, but Muhammad
also is allowed his own individual
time alone at times as well.

Parenting Styles
In Muhammad's household,
parental authority is shared
between both his mother
and father. However,
Muhammad's father is much
stricter in his parenting than
Muhammad's mother.
Muhammad's parents are in
direct contact with his
school, and are very
involved in watching his
grades. Muhammad's
parents also allow him and
his sister unlimited access
to the internet.

Life at Home
Muhammad is not really given specific chores in his home, but he does
tend to perform more physical tasks around and outside the home.
Muhammad does not, and does not plan on working until he leaves his
home. He is given an allowance to pay for the things he needs and
wants. Also, Muhammad gets help from his parents when planning his
daily routines, but he also gets some input in his activities.

Education

Muhammad loves to go to school. At his school boys and girls
are separated. There is around 25 students per class. At
Muhammad's school grades are more focused on tests than
participation or other assignments. During the day,
Muhammad stays in the same classroom, and different
teachers for different subjects switch to come teach
Muhammad and his classmates. Muhammad always addresses
his teachers using formal titles, and he has a very professional
relationship with them. His school does not tolerate fighting or
cell phone usage at all. The punishments for engaging in
these activities are very harsh. Just like the picture,
Muhammad wears a uniform every day to school. He is
required to wear a thoub, which is a long and white robe.
Muhammad's school does not offer any clubs or sports teams,
so after school Muhammad usually just goes home.

Peers
Muhammad's best friend is named
Omar. Muhammad and Omar hang out
with each other alone, and with in
groups with other of their peers.
Muhammad and Omar both enjoy
hanging out outside, and they live in
the same neighborhood. Their parents
are also friends. Muhammad and Omar
share their allowances to buy the
things that they want. Muhammad
considers Omar a peer because they
are good friends, but others that he
only talks to sometimes he considers
acquaintances.

Social Interactions
When Muhammad talks to others he
does not usually make eye contact,
especially when talking to elders. He
looks down as a sign of respect.
Muhammad also really likes his
personal space, as do most of the
others he talks to and interacts with.
As well, Muhammad tries to make it to
events on time, but sometimes he is a
little late. However, that is usually
okay because in Saudi Arabia most
people expect guests to be a little late.

Dating
Muhammad has never dated any girls his age. His
parents do not really approve of him talking to girls,
or hanging out with them. However, they are much
more understanding than his grandparents about
relationships with the girls. Even though he is not
supposed to, Muhammad sometimes has friendly
conversations with girls his age. When Muhammad
grows into a man his parents will arrange a marriage
to a wife for him.
