The War of 1812, was a two and a half year conflict 

between the United States   of America and the United 

Kingdom of Great Britain.  

At the Beginning of the 19th century, Europe was in a 

bitter conflict with Napoleon Bonaparte's France. In an 

attempt to cut of supplies, both Britain and France imposed 

trade embargoes with the U.S. Members of Congress 

agitated for war based on British violations of maritime 

rights. 

On June 18, 1812, President 

Madison signed a declaration of 

war against Britain. 

U.S. forces attacked Canada, then a British 

colony. American soldiers were unprepared but 

found success in the initial invasion. 

Native Americans led by Tecumseh and British led by 

Sir Isaac Brock take over Detroit without any shots 

fired.

Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry was able to 

retake Detroit in the Battle of Thames.
