This book is an attempt to tell the "real" story of
Thanksgiving. The story will follow the landing of the
Pilgrims and their fateful interaction with the native
population, the Wampanoag people. It will describe
not only the people involved in the "first"
Thanksgiving but also the events that led up to it that
gave it it's meaning.
In 1620 the Pilgrims crossed the Atlantic on the
Mayflower and landed on the shores of Cape Cod on
November 20th. They named their settlement "New
Plymouth," a territory already inhabited by the
Wampanoag people.

The Pilgrims faced harsh conditions since it was the
middle of winter and struggled to survive with little food
and supplies. Half of the Pilgrims died during the first
winter.

The Wampanoag people had been watching the
colonists and as was their custom to help
visitors, they extended their courtesy and
assistance to the Pilgrims. A man by the name
Squanto, who spoke English from his past as a
slave of English explorers, made first
contact with the village and began to teach
them ways to live in the New World.

Squanto stayed with the Pilgrims for the next
few months and showed them many helpful
lessons for survival such as, how to cultivate
corn and other new vegetables, how to build
Indian-style houses, how to dig and cook
clams, how to get sap from the maple trees,
use fish for fertilizer and how to use certain
plants.

The year passed and the Pilgrims were able to use
what Squanto taught them in order to produce a
successful harvest. They now would have enough
food to last through the winter as well as the new,
necessary skills in order to survive.

The Pilgrims decided to have a thanksgiving
feast to celebrate their good fortune. The leader
of the Pilgrims invited Squanto, his friend
Samoset, Massasoit (the leader of the
Wampanoag's), and their immediate families to
join them in celebration.
