Once upon a time, there was a little girl named
Autumn. Autumn was curious about everything on
EARTH, and she liked to dress like a pirate. Some
people thought this ABSOLUTE obsession with
understanding the world around her was ABNORMAL,
but Autumn disagreed. Autumn spent all of her time
exploring her ENVIRONMENT with her best friend,
CATALYST the cat, who was a GEOLOGIST. Together,
Autumn and Catalyst, the geologist, set out to learn
about a few things that they were curious
about,DINOSAURS, EARTHQUAKES, OCEANIC life,
and VOLCANOES. With an ABUNDANCE of questions,
they ABRUPTLY took ACTION, and left their home to
go exploring. With Catalyst ACCOMPANYING her,
Autumn knew that they would find fun, adventure,
and maybe some answers along the way. (14)

First, Autumn wanted to know about what happened to the
dinosaurs, so she and Catalyst wandered into the DESERT
to look for some EVIDENCE of the EXTINCT animals. Being
the expert geologist that Catalyst was, she pointed out to
Autumn some GIGANTIC FOSSILS that were once
dinosaurs. Now that Autumn had seen some RECORD of
dinosaur life, she wanted to know why they went into
EXTINCTION. Catalyst explained that no one knew, but it
could have been a FLOOD, a METEORITE, CLIMATE change,
or any other number of CATACLYSMIC EVENTS. The
important thing is that with the proper RESOURCES,
archaeologists absorb information from the clues that
dinosaurs left behind. Eventually when they have
ACCUMULATED enough information from the
ENVIORNMENT, they can create THEORIES of what went
wrong. (30)

Next, Autumn and Catalyst decided to RESEARCH why
we have EARTHQUAKES. They OBSERVED that
earthquakes OCCUR at random, but that there is a
SCALE used to MEASURE the RELEASE of ENERGY that
occurs during an earthquake, and that scientists can
determine the DEGREE of an earthquake by measuring
the movement at the EPICENTER of the quake. They also
learned that they occur due to the shifting of Earth's
PLATES in a PROCESS called PLATE TECTONICS, which is
responsible for the CONTINENTS DRIFTING apart in a
process called CONTINENTAL DRIFT. As of today, there
is no APPARANT ANTECEDANT that tells us when an
earthquake is coming, but there are some signs and
MACHANICAL machines that can alert us immediately
when an earthquake is beginning, and someday maybe
they will predict them too. (49)

Satisfied with their knowledge and ANALYSIS of the
PLANET and earthquakes, the pair of adventurers wandered
down to the SHORELINE that was ADJACENT to the FAULT
LINE that they had been observing, to accumulate some
knowledge of ocean life. Autumn and Catalyst decided the
best way to observe natural PHENOMENON was to snorkle
through the water to see the BARRIER REEF. They used
some INSTRUMENTS as they snorkeled to allow them to
see the BACTERIA that live underwater. Since they were
both COMPETENT swimmers, they were able to ALTERNATE
sharing the oxygen tank, and still had the CAPACITY to
observe the life all around them that could not be seen
from the COAST. Autumn could hardly CONTAIN her
excitement when she saw a crab EMERGE from the
CONFINES of his shell! When she felt brave enough, she
even reached out her hand to make CONTACT with the
critter.
(65)

The ocean was just such a large HABITAT to observe, that Autumn and
Catalyst spent several hours observing and recording their DATA. They
made a CHART of all of the creatures that they saw, and even swam into a
dark CHAMBER in an underwater cave to see some truly unique fish!
Eventually, their oxygen tank began to run low though, and unless they
could magically CONVERT H2O into oxygen, they decided that it might be
best to leave the water and FOCUS on some other ELEMENT of the GLOBE
such as volcanoes. First they would need to eat though because it had been
a long day and they needed more CALORIES and FUEL for their bodies or
they would COLLAPSE! On their way to get some dinner, they COLLIDED
with a THUNDERSTORM! "EL NINO has struck again," Autumn thought, "So
much for the DROUGHT!" A little RAINFALL never hurt anyone though, so
they grabbed some umbrellas and enjoyed the RAINSTORM and
REFLECTED that they should be grateful it was simply PRECIPITATION and
wasn't a BLIZZARD! She noticed that the storm had already started to slow
down to a DRIZZLE, and she knew that the water would EVAPORATE soon
enough!
(88)

As Autumn and Catalyst made their way to a DORMANT
volcano that was DOWNSTREAM from a nearby river, they saw
some EROSION of the hardened LAVA that was now IGNEOUS
ROCK. The igneous rock had been weathered by the stream
bed and rock SEDIMENT had been washed away. The DOME of
the volcano was tall and pointed, and easily seen from the spot
where Autumn and Catalyst sat. Autumn had a small LAPSE in
judgment, and decided that she wanted to hike to the top of
the volcano to look for some MAGMA. Unfortunately, she
couldn't see any from the top. Even though the volcano was
dormant, out of RESPECT for the environment, she was
careful not to leave anything FLAMMABLE by the volcano, just
in case it should catch fire from the heat. There wasn't any
PRESENT danger of an ERUPTION, but Autumn was
PREDOMINANTLY sensible by nature, so she and Catalyst took
their leave to return home.
