To start, this is a note

Sometimes there are lots of these!

4
And sometimes there is this...

(I hope you never see this!)
5

In music, there are beats, or pulses that help push the music along, some stronger than others. For example if there are 4 beats, the 1st and 3rd beat will generally be the strongest.
6
A quarter note usually equals a beat. A whole note has 4 beats and an eighth note is a quarter note divided by 2. Uh-oh, and you thought math wasn't involved!

7
With that in mind, if you saw a whole note, then you can say it has 4 quarter notes, or 4 beats within it.

8
This is a half note. It has 2 beats, or 2 quarters within it.
