Activating Schema

2
“Do you know what it means to be emphatic? I will tell you: It means that when you are being forcibly taken to a dungeon, when you have a large knife at your back, when you are trying to be brave, you are able, still, to think for a moment of the person who is holding the knife.”
- This quotebuilds schema about empathy - empathy is being able to relate to others by being sensitive towards their emotions, even if their views are different from your own.

Questioning

4
“Farewell” is not the word that you would like to hear from your
mother as you are being led to the dungeon by two oversize mice in black hoods.Words that you would like to hear are “Take me instead, I will go to the dungeon in my sons place.”
- This quote makes me question the relationship between Despereaux and his family. I wonder why Despereaux's mother would allow her son to be taken to prison without trying to save him or protest.

Imagery

“His heart was beating hard, and though the light from the match had disappeared, it danced, still, before the rat's eyes, even when he closed them.”
- This portrays how the brightness of the light from Gregory's candle leaves Roscuro awestruck.
Despereaux shuddered. His own brother was delivering him to the dungeon. His heart stopped beating and shrunk to a small, cold, disbelieving pebble.”
- Despereaux loses hope after his own brother betrays him, and his heart is compared to a lifeless pebble.

Determining Importance
8
“Reader, you must know that an interesting fate (sometimes involving rats, sometimes not) awaits almost everyone, mouse or man, who does not conform.”
- Each of the main characters struggles with what makes them different. However, they remain true to themselves, which causes issues in their lives. But, ultimately, by not resisting to conform, they develop individuality and self-actualization.
He said, 'I forgive you, Pa.'
And he said those words because he sensed it was the only way to save his own heart, to stop it from breaking in two.
- Forgiveness is absolutely necessary for any relationship. If Despereaux had never forgiven his father, his own heart would have remained broken and angry.
