Algebra is the study of mathematics using symbols. It is usually the first look at working with letters in math that mathematicians call variables. The fun part of algebra includes discovering patterns we can find in all the problems we solve. This book is going to take you on a journey through 3 different functions that all have similar patterns to discover. We call these Parent Functions as they are where all functions start.

Linear Functions are first on our tour of Algebra Parent Functions. The Parent Function for Linear Functions is the function y = x. A linear function can be defined as a relationship between 2 quantities that is constant. There is a constant rate to an increase or a decrease, called the slope or the rate of change. Standard form of a linear function is y = mx + b where m is the slope or the rate of change and b is the y-intercept or also called the start value. In the parent function, the slope is 1 and the y-intercept is 0.
