Title: ABCs of Neil Armstrong: First Astronaut to Walk on the Moon.
Author: Robert Traynham
Illustrated by: Robert Traynham
2
Aa-Armstrong
Neil Armstrong was the first astronaut to walk on the moon. Astronauts are the people who go above Earth’s atmosphere (air in the sky) to explore the planets, moons and outer space.

3
Bb- Buzz
Buzz Aldrin flew with Neil Armstrong to the moon on Apollo 11. He was the second astronaut to walk on the moon. Disney named the character “Buzz” Lightyear after him.

4
Cc- Collins
Michael Collins (center) was the third astronaut on the Apollo 11 trip to the moon with Neil Armstrong (left), and Buzz Aldrin. (right). He stayed in the Command module in orbit and never walked on the moon.

5
Dd - Dock
Michael Collins stayed in the Command module and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin flew the Eagle Lunar module to the Moon. After leaving the moon, the Eagle lunar module docked (connected) back to the Command module before flying back to Earth. Docking is very complicated because you have to get the speed and position just right so the two space craft can connect together.

6
Ee- Earth
Neil Armstrong and the other astronauts were able to take a picture of the earth from the moon, proving the earth is not flat.

7
Ff- Footprint
Here is a picture of Buzz Aldrin’s footprint on the moon.
Because there is no weather on the moon this should last a very long time.

8
Gg- Gravity
There is less gravity on the moon than the Earth. This means when you leap and jump - you can go VERY high.

9
Hh- Helicopter
Helicopters were the first to rescue Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins after their Command module landed back down on Earth in the ocean.

10
Ii- Isolation
When Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins landed back on Earth they had to stay in an isolation unit, to make sure they didn’t have any germs from the moon. Below they are talking to Richard Nixon who was the President of the United States when they landed.

11
Jj- Jump
Because there is less gravity, an astronaut can jump VERY high-- much higher than on Earth.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Cm83yYtDns

12
Kk - Kennedy
Apollo 11 was launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Kennedy Space Center was named after President Kennedy who first announced the mission to the Moon.

13
Ll - Lunar
Lunar is an adjective that means of the moon. A space craft that is for moon travel is called a lunar space craft. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon in a lunar space craft named "Eagle.

14
Mm – Moon
The Earth only has one large body in the sky, the Moon. Below is a picture of an astronaut on the moon looking back at the Earth.

15
Nn – N.A.S.A.
Neil Armstrong worked for a group that studied airplanes. That group later became part of NASA, which is short for the National Aeronautic Space Administration. One of NASA’s centers is Kennedy Space Center, and is in Florida. Another NASA Center is named the Armstrong Flight Center, and is in California.

16
Oo – Orbit
Orbit means the circle-like path a space craft takes around any body such as the Earth, planet or moon. Below is an artist’s picture of the Apollo 11 spacecraft as it entered orbit around the moon on July 19, 1969.

17
Pp – Pilot
Neil Armstrong worked as a test airplane pilot at NASA for many years, before NASA started up an astronaut program to travel to outer space.

18
Qq – Quiet
There is no air on the moon. Without air there is no sound and therefore everything is quiet on both the moon and outer space. Astronauts have to talk inside their space suits and spacecraft to hear any sounds.

19
Rr – Rocket
Rockets must be used to leave the Earth’s gravity to go high into outer space. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were inside the Apollo 11 rocket below to go to the moon. Notice rockets fly up or vertically.

20
Ss – Spacecraft
Spacecraft are any vehicles or modules that can fly in space. The Apollo spacecraft packed together the lunar module, service module, and command modules when it launched, and they later separated. Lower stages of the spacecraft were ejected (thrown away) so that only the top of the space craft flew on to the moon.

21
Tt - Tether
A tether is a rope to let astronauts tie safely to his or her spacecraft, so they don’t fly away into outer space.
