Long time ago, strange creatures lived in Istria. Some of them were bigger than the biggest mountains, and some of them small, like the olives.

According to the legend, a long time ago, fairies inhabited Istria. At night, they would dance on the forest clearings and on the dewy meadows, wiping off dew from the fragrant flowers and grass.

One evening, the fairies took along with them the smallest fairy of all. She was admiring everything around her and she joined the others in wheel-dancing. Spinning around, she wanted it to last forever,but fairies are nightly creatures and they have to flee when the shining stars begin to fade away in the morning and the first cock crows, so as to hide from the people.

Because of that, they wanted to build a large building, where they would hide from ordinary people. The following night, they started dragging stones from Mount Učka and putting them in a circle to build high walls. Skilled and hardworking, they built a magnificent monument - the ARENA. The final venture was to build a roof to the huge building, but...

As they were working, the cock crowed and they had to run away, leaving big and small rocks scattered all over Istria, from Učka to the Adriatic Sea.

At dawn, huge creatures would come out from their hideouts - the Giants. Big, generous and hardworking, they were building bigger and smaller towns in the River Mirna valley, carrying huge rocks like they were feathers.

The tired Giants would often refresh themselves with clean water from the Mirna River and then, they would lay next to it on the soft grass and, listening to its quiet, sleep-inducing murmur, they would fall asleep. But, after that night when the fairies had left the stones and rocks scattered all over the place while trying to build the Arena, instead of a comfortable grass-bed, all they got was a sore back.
