One day, Dog's mom told him to read a book. Dog found a book about biomes.
3

It's really
cold here
4
Dog read that the book said that a biome is a big community of animals and plants. The first biome was the Arctic Tundra.
5

These trees are so bare...
6
In the book it said that the Arctic Tundra is a biome where trees grow slower because of lower temperatures and short growing seasons. It is usually either Summer or Winter because Spring and Fall don’t last long. Summers are cool with temperatures between 37-60 degrees. There are about 6-10 inches of rain a year.
7

8
Dog read that there are animals such as bears, wolves, foxes, deer, and hares. There are plants like shrubs, sedges, moss, and lichens. Animals such as foxes have to adapt from summer to winter by shedding their summer coat, and growing a thick winter coat to keep them warm. Some plants like the purple saxifrage have adapted so that they grow near the ground so that the wind is blocked, and they have also adapted to grow underneath the snow.
9

They smell good...
10
The book said that there are 400 species of flowers but only 48 species of animals. Also, it is the driest place on Earth.
11

It is so amazing
12
The next biome that dog read about was the Taiga. It is the largest biome in the world. It is a forest that stretches over Eurasia and North America. It’s near the top of the world below the Tundra.
13

I love
this book!
14
Dog read that the winters are really cold, and all it does is snow during the winter. The summers are humid, and rainy, but still warm. And also that the Taiga gets 12-33 inches of rain a year( it mostly rains in summer).
15

16
The book said that there are many animals like birds, foxes, lynxes, bears, and minks. There are also plants such as lichens, mosses, and lots of trees. The birds have to migrate in the winter because it gets too cold for them, and then when they come back, they have to adapt to the chilly weather. The lichens have to adapt to the cold weather by being able to stay alive in winter, and then in the summer they have to produce a lot of food and change for the warmer weather.
17

18
There are lots of wildfires so the trees have very thick bark. Also, many insect eating birds go to the Taiga to breed.
19

20
The next biome Dog read about was the Temperate forest. Temperate forests are areas of trees that receive heavy rainfall. In the summer it is usually 70 degrees. Winters are usually below freezing. The forests get 30-60 inches of rain.
21

22
Dog read that in Temperate forests, there are birds, deer, raccoon, opossums, red foxes, and bears. There are also plants like lichen, moss, ferns, shrubs, trees. Bears adapted because they now know to hibernate in the winter when the food supply gets short. Mosses and ferns grow on top other plants to reach the sunlight.
23

24
Many animals use camouflage to blend in, and most of the trees in temperate forests have sap.
25

That's a lot of grass.
26
Another biome Dog read about was Grasslands. Grasslands are areas where the vegetation is mostly grasses. In the winter, temperatures can be as cold as -40 degrees and in the summer it can go up to 70 degrees. Grasslands get about 10-30 inches of rain a year.
