A number is something we can count with! Thousands of years ago, someone realized we needed a way to name how many of something and the concept of numbers was created. As time went on, the need for different types of numbers led to the creation of number sets. Let's take a look.

There are two main number sets that we work with in high school: Real Numbers and Imaginary Numbers.

In Algebra 1, our focus is on the Real Number System. It looks like this.

Counting Numbers
Counting numbers are numbers we use to count. Think about playing hide and seek. What number do you start counting with?

One!

Correct!

1, 2, 3...
The set of counting numbers is the smallest set of numbers in the real number system. It starts with one and goes on forever. They are also known as natural numbers.

Whole Numbers
The next set of numbers is called the whole numbers. This set includes all the counting numbers, and adds the number zero.
