CHAPTER ONE

4
The first day of school is always nerve wracking. I pulled my brown hair back and put in its usual braid before I left my house. I stepped outside to meet the bus when I saw it coming down the street. A few minutes later, after I get to school, I saw the one person that could ruin this day. His name was Marcus and he was the most annoying 10 year old I had ever met. There was no way I wouldn't be able to see him with black hair is as spiked as ever. I hoped he didn't recognize me, so I started to walk faster. I speed walked up to the flagpole and waited for my friends. I looked at all of the bobbing heads, but none of them belonged to my group.
Just then, I spotted Jamie's bleach blonde hair through the crowd. She is my best friend.
I waved to get her attention and she waved back. She strode over to where I was standing.
"Hey, Marie!" she said. "What's up?".
"Oh, nothi...oh no," I said. Just as I was about to answer, Marcus had spotted us.
"Hey ladies. I didn't know you would be here," Marcus said sarcastically. He stood next
to Jamie and put his arm on her shoulder.
5
Since we were both quite a bit taller than him, he had to go on his tip-toes. I smirked but made sure that I didn't laugh."Aren't you supposed to be in fifth grade?" I asked. "My mom said I'm too smart for fifth grade, so now I'm here!" he replied. Jamie rolled her eyes and pushed his arm off of her shoulder.
"Well, my friends are waiting for me. See you later!" he said while he walked away.
Somehow, I was lucky enough to have all of my friends in my class. It was almost time for school to start, so we went inside and made our way to homeroom. Jamie and I were waiting for our friend Carrie to show up. She's the nerd of the group. As we should've guessed, when we got to homeroom we saw that Carrie was already there. We said our hellos to each other and settled in for a long morning full of hard work, which we didn't expect on the first day of school.
It felt like days before we went to lunch. I arrived in the cafeteria first and found a seat at what we would soon claim as "our table". After a few minutes, Jamie and Carrie strode in and came over to meet me.
6
"Hey guys! Can you believe we've got a homework assignment on the first day of school?" I asked.
"I know right! I can't wait to start!" Carrie said excitedly.
"At least it will be easy," I replied. "For me this homework assignment is totally horrible!" Jamie said sounding panicked. "I have a gaming tournament this week and I can't miss it!"
"Anyway, like I said, it will be easy." l say.
"Yeah, you're right. I mean, how hard could it be? It's just a paper on fact or fiction," Carrie said. I already know what I'm going to write for fiction." Carrie continued. "Oh really? What are you going to write?" asked Jamie.
"Well, have you two ever heard of the shape-shifting watch?" Carrie said. Jamie and l both shook our heads.
"The legend says that if you put it on and move the hands to certain hours, you can turn in to whatever you wish for.
7
And even better, the legend says its in our town." Carrie explained. Jamie's mouth was hanging wide open. "That sounds awesome," she said, awestruck."But, like I said, it's not real," Carrie replied.
"It would be cool if it did exist though," I said. "I would want to be a wolf. I don't want to be anything weak," I continued.
"I would want to be a monkey." Carrie said. "l know they are gross sometimes, but they
are very intelligent. I want to keep my smarts."
"l actually don't know what I would want to be," Jamie said. Carrie and I looked at her for a moment.
"I think you would be a lioness," I replied suddenly.
"Why would I be a lioness?" Jamie asked, very confused.
"Well, your long flowing hair would kind of explain it," I said. "Plus, lions are fierce, like when you're gaming."
8
This made us all laugh out loud and then the lunch bell rang and we have to go back to class. We couldn't believe that lunch was already over! You all know the saying, "Time flies when you're having fun."

CHAPTER TWO

10
That night I laid in my bed and I couldn't get my mind off of the legendary watch. Since I wasn't able to sleep, I did some research with my smartphone. I began by investigating The Watch of Waterford. Waterford is the town we live in. The first thing I checked was to see if there were any pictures, and when I found them, a lot popped up. One drawing in particular caught my attention. The watch is very bulky with a leather strap. It also had a small, metallic key on the left side of its base.
"That must be how you shape shift." I thought. I see the picture came from a hyperlink, so I excitedly click on it. When I did, I find a whole blog about the watch. I scrolled down to see what I could find. There were more pictures of it and many long writings that are full of research.
Then, l saw a map of Waterford and I read the caption beneath it.
The author wrote
"Even though my findings have been close to nonexistent, I have finally located the watch.
11
I have made a map to show you where other researchers thought the watch was and where I know it really is the purple dots are from the others and the red dot is mine. I assure you, this is where it is."
I stared, wide eyed, at the map. I saw all of the purple dots that were spread out around the map. There were at least 20. Then, I saw the one red dot the author claimed is the watch's location. Surprisingly, it was smack dab in the middle of the woods next to my house. I could hardly wait to share my research findings with my friends as I shut off the lights to try and get
some sleep!
When I opened my eyes, I was so excited it was the weekend. I could hardly wait to tell Carrie and Jamie about what I read and hoped we would be in for an adventure!
I jogged downstairs and took an apple on my way out the door. I went into my garage, grabbed my bike, and took off toward Jamie's house. She only lived a few blocks away from me.
I started to pedal slow, but got a lot faster the closer I got to sharing my information.
12
Then I finally got to her house, I knocked very urgently, and to my surprise, she was the one who answered the door.
"Listen to me," I started. "I need you to get Carrie and come with me, I have a secret for the both of you."
"Give me a minute. I need to get my bike," she said.
"Okay you two, I gathered you here to tell you both something very important," I said.
"This better be important." said Jamie.
"Yeah, I wanted to start a book today and you ruined my plans, Marie, " Carrie added.
"I know you two had plans, but this is a lot more important," I replied. They both stared at me skeptically. "You know how you thought the Watch of Waterford wasn't real? Well, I found a website that will definitely will change your mind. "I pull out my phone and proceeded to show them the blog that I found. After they finish reading it, Carrie said. "This doesn't mean that it's real, though,"
13
"I know, that's why we're going to find out," I replied.
With Carrie and Jamie by my side we began our forest adventure. "Are you sure about this?" Jamie asked, nervously. "
"Don't worry about it! The woods can't be that bad," Carrie said. "Think of all the science that happens everywhere in these woods, like families of forest creatures we don't even know." Carrie's comments always reminded us of school for some reason, so Jamie and I just nodded in agreement as neither of us wanted to think about school on the weekend. It was really quiet in the woods except for the sound of our steps crackling as twigs snapped at our feet.
All of the sudden, Jamie broke the silence saying, "I think we should follow that."
"You just read my mind," I replied. A path seemed to appear out of nowhere, so Jamie, Carrie, and I decided to follow it.
We followed the newly found path for about 30 more minutes.
"Over there!" Carrie said, pointing and making both Jamie and I jump.
14
I looked over to where she was pointing and there it was. We had finally found the watch and it was hanging on a branch, like it was meant for us to find. I cautiously walked over to the watch and picked it up.
"This looks exactly like the drawing," I said, examining it. I decided it slip it over my wrist and I just looked at it.
"I want to try it," I said, putting two of my fingers on the metal key.
"Wait! If this really works, you won't know how to turn back," Carrie replied nervously. "I'll
be fine. I promise," I said. I turned the metal key and thought "I want to be a wolf, please let me
be a wolf." I shut my eyes and hoped. I felt a tingling sensation start at my toes and after a few
minutes, it ended at the top of my head. I was scared to open my eyes.
Jamie and Carrie sounded like one person saying, "Wow" Then, I realized what had happened and I gave a great howl just as I always wished I could.
15
My howl was so realistic the girls screamed and start to run away! I felt like I sounded the same as I always did , but the girls kept running faster and faster until Carrie tripped and fell over a branch. I caught up to her in an instant. She was crying, begging me not to bite her. I tried to talk to her and tell her it was me, when just then Jamie threw a big rock that flew right past my face! I saw the watch on my paw and remembered that they think I am a real wolf; so I turned and ran further into the forest as fast as I could. I knew I needed to get lost until I could figure out how to shift back to a human. From a distance, I could see the girls comfort themselves and make their way out of the woods.
I started to panic and I wondered if I could ever turn back into the old me.
"Let's see," I start to think. "Carrie didn't know anything about how to turn back. Great, I have to figure it out." I start to pace and then I get an idea. "Maybe I can turn back the same way I turned into a wolf!" I thought. I pulled my paw up to my mouth and twisted the watch around to that it would be easier to reach. I grabbed the metallic key in my mouth and turned it.
16
"Let me be what I was. Let me be a human again." I start to feel the same tingling sensation that I felt before, but this time I kept my eyes open. I grew a lot taller and my hands no longer touched the ground. I knew my idea had worked.
I woke up the next day hoping that Carrie and Jamie would still follow our usual lazy Sunday routine and meet up at "our swings" in the town park. I jumped on my bike and hoped to be the first one there, but the person who beat me to our hangout was not who I'd expect."Hey, did you hear about the wolf that was spotted in the woods yesterday?" asked Marcus.
"Wolf?" I asked, knowingly. "We don't have wolves in our town Marcus, that must be a
rumor."
"That's what my dad said to my mom today at breakfast too. I still think it could be true."
Marcus replied.
17
"You've got a wild imagination for a Sunday morning." I heard a familiar voice say. I was
relieved to turn and see Jamie on her bike and Carrie on her scooter headed my way. You can
never have too many reinforcements with Marcus around.
"Well, I'm going on a wilderness adventure to see if I can't spot the wolf with my own eyes.
Any of you chickens want to come?" He asked annoyingly. All three of us said, "No" as if we
already knew what he was going to ask. "You better get going then," Carrie said "gets dark early in the woods, it may take you all day."
"Yeah, yeah," he said, "you'll be jealous when I'm in the news for finding the first wolf of
Waterford."
"Well, we won't be sad if you get eaten by the big bad wolf that's for sure," Jamie added.

18
CHAPTER THREE

19
The second week of school started and the only thing people were talking about was the
wolf.
"Wow. I've never been this popular before," I thought. When I walked in the hallway, I heard various things about the wolf of Waterford, such as "My dad was so worried for our family," or "I swear I'm going to catch that monstrosity!" I wanted so badly to tell other kids that it was just me, that I was the wolf. I couldn't though, the watch's magic would be exposed and I knew my secret was better left unspoken when at school.
It seemed like forever until the end of the school day. I texted Jamie and Carrie and said "I need to talk to both of you, now if possible." Jamie texted back and said "Sure. Do you want us to go to your house?" I responded with "Yes. Come over at about 4:00" . The clock finally turned to 3:59, and just like clockwork, Jamie knocked on my door. She was great about being on time because of her gaming.
20
She is always reliably right where she needs to be at the exact moment she needs to be there.
"So, why did you ask us to come here?" Jamie and Carrie asked like a recording. We went up to my room for ultimate privacy and sat on my bed to talk of our wolf adventure.
"The watch. We know for sure that it really works. And, I was the wolf because I wished to be a wolf." I said. "So the awesome power that it has is kind of exciting and scary at the same time don't you think?" I have been keeping it in a jewelry box on my dresser," I said. I stood up and took the watch out of the box and put it in Jamie's hands.
"Wow, that's cool, but I really don't think you should give this to me, though. I might lose
it!" Jamie replied.
"Well, I don't trust myself with it!" I said.
"Then Carrie is the only person we can trust with it!" Jamie suggested.
21
"Actually, that's a good idea," I said and quickly put it on her wrist. "That will work," Carrie said in an authoritative voice, "I have a color coded, alphabetical, chronological organization system and it will be easy to keep track of it," she said, agreeing with our decision. Jamie and I smiled and knew we'd made the exact right decision to keep the watch safe! It was getting to be dinner time so we decided to end our meeting. Carrie happily agreed to wear the watch home and promised Jamie and I that she wouldn't lose it.
Imagine our surprise when Carrie didn't show up at the school flag pole the next morning. I hoped she was just sick, but I wasn't so sure what type of illness. I had an anxious feeling deep down inside, as Carrie has never missed a single day of school as along as I've been her friend.
"Do you know where Carrie is?" I asked Jamie.
"She didn't text you this morning?" Jamie said.
22
"Huh, she must be sick." I replied. We looked at each other with a strange concern, like we both hoped she was sick but knew better. Little did we know our routine day was about to be anything but "routine. "
