Haiti is a country that lies south of the United States, in the Caribbean Sea.
Some people know of Haiti because it is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, but when I think of Haiti, I think of rich culture, vibrant landscape and beautiful people.

When I first travelled to Haiti, I thought that Haiti needed to be 'fixed'.
From a young age, we learn that broken things are ours to fix, but after travelling there many times, I now know that this is not the case.
Rather than fixing Haiti, there is so much that I can learn from the people who call Haiti home.
This is my thank you to Haiti for opening my eyes to all of its admirable qualities.

Thank you, Haiti, for showing me what true joy looks like.

6
What makes you happy?
Is it your latest toy? Watching a movie? Going to an amusement park?
These are things that many kids in Haiti will never experience, but they still have overflowing joy!
They find this joy through singing songs, making handshakes and playing games.

7
Thank you, Haiti, for challenging me to learn a new language.

8
The national language in Haiti is Haitian Creole. Here are some of the Creole terms that I use everyday when I am in Haiti:
- Good Morning - "Bonjou"
- Good Afternoon - "Bonswa"
- Thank You - "Mési"
- What is your name? - "Koman ou rele?"
- How are you? - "Koman ou ye?"
9
Thank you, Haiti, for showing me your natural beauty.

10
Ranging from vast deserts, to high mountains, to Caribbean beaches, Haiti has a plethora of beautiful scenery.
11
Thank you, Haiti, for exposing me to the homes of others and opening my eyes to the blessings in my life.

12
The houses in Haiti look very different from the houses in America. A typical house in Haiti may be made of concrete, clay, rocks, or dried palm leaves.
Even though their homes are not elaborate, they love to invite you in and will likely give you their only chair to sit in.
13
Thank you, Haiti, for introducing me to new cuisine.

14
While a typical lunch in America might include a sandwich, fruit and chips, in Haiti a common lunch consists of some form of beans and rice.
Other common foods include goat, plantain, which is easily mistaken for banana, and Haitian Spaghetti, made with spaghetti noodles, ketchup and hotdogs.
