There once was a eggplant named Oscar. While all
the other fruits and vegetables lived inside the
refrigerator, Oscar lived by himself in a bowl on the
kitchen counter.
He could often hear them singing fun songs like
"Wheels on the Bus" and "Row Row Row your
Boat" (in the round, no less).
He wished he could join in with them, but there were
two problems. First, he was stuck on this bowl in the
kitchen. Second, he couldn't sing!

One morning, he woke up to find someone else on
the kitchen table. It was a banana.
"Hello, Banana," said Oscar. "What's your name?"
But the banana didn't answer. It just looked at him.
Maybe he didn't hear me, thought Oscar. "HELLO
BANANA, WHAT IS YOUR NAME?"
Still, the banana did not respond. This is irritating,
thought Oscar. Finally someone to talk to, but he
doesn't talk!

The banana hopped back to his friends, the pumpkin and the
strawberry. They started to giggle.
Oscar sighed. He wished he could laugh with them, but they
wouldn't even talk to him.
What was he going to do?

That night, a beautiful nightingale landed in the tree by the kitchen
window and pecked on the window.
PECK PECK PECK!
What's that? thought Oscar.
PECK PECK PECK!
Something's pecking at the window! he thought.
PECK PECK PECK!
I'd better see what it is... he decided.

Oscar hopped over to the window and looked outside.
"A bird!" he exclaimed, opening the window.
"You must be hungry," he said. He went over to the picnic basket
on the bench and took out two croissants.
"There you go, Mr. Bird!" he said, laying one down in front of
the nightingale.
The nightingale dug into it hungrily, then, when it was done,
began to sing.
"Wow..." breathed Oscar. "You sing beautifully, Mr. Bird!"
