Unit 2 Slavery comes to an end
After slavery ended, slaves found it hard to find a job because all they know was working in gardens. So, their jobs were mostly based on working on lands which were owned by the whites. However, some of the slaves chose another path to find jobs that aren't field related. After congress made slavery illegal, the slaves moved to different places to enjoy their freedom.
8
The slaves moved north and west. The ones who moved west found themselves jobs on the railroads. Also, there were others who worked as housecleaners. They worked as cooks and babysitters. Fortunately, some of them were lucky enough to start their own business. The slaves who travelled to the west were known as settlers. Unfortunately for them, there was a law in the west that stopped them from travelling there. So they moved back where they came from which was Africa.

Civil War : effect on slavery
The white southerners would wage war in order to make the confederacy a separate and independent nation free to promote slavery. The white northerners, on the other hand , wanted to maintain the union but it doesn't mean they wanted to free slaves. When the civil war comes to an end in April 1865, there were about 750k people were dead, including 50k of African Americans. The union was protected and about 4 million black people were freed.
10
According to slavery, Abraham Lincoln wanted to stop slavery from expanding. The slaves were angry with him because they thought his speech would abolish slavery and not expand it. He also moved toward emancipation and wanted compensation. When compensated emancipation was rejected by border states in 1862, he decided Union brings victory. The northerners and westerners refused to accept the idea of freeing black people. He eventually abolished slavery.

African Americans played an important role in the civil war. There were about 200,000 who served in the union army. And 37,000 of them died in that army. Even though African Americans soldiers didn't have the same rights as the other whites soldiers, they still believed serving the union army was the loyal thing to do. Most of them who served in that army were slaves who escaped. African Americans were paid lower wages than whites. Also, most of the jobs that were assigned to them involved getting killed. They had the most difficult jobs. Later on, fourteen African Americans earned Medal of Honor for their outstanding works of bravery and was assigned meaningful jobs in the Union Army.
