Once upon a time there was a turtle named Tickles. He had just hatched from the egg and was waddling to the ocean with his friends Cotton Eye Joe and Rick. They stopped at the edge of the shore and gazed upon the continental shelf and continental rise.

Tickles stared out at the ocean and suddenly realized that he was scared. He turned to his friends and said "Guys, I don't know if I can go into the ocean." His friends responded with enthusiasm and Rick told him, "A river cuts through a rock not because of its power but its persistence." (Anonymous)

With Rick's motivation, the three set off into the ocean. At first the journey was peaceful, but then Tickles looked down. To his astonishment there were things moving in the water beneath him on the abyssal plain.
