Melanin protects individuals from UV radiation by absorbing ultraviolet radiation in sunlight, which would otherwise cause mutations in the DNA of skin cells and other damaging effects.

Cutaneous carcinoma develops hard, dry and scaly growths with reddish bases. Most common on the neck, face, or scalp.
Cutaneous melanoma is pigmented with melanin, found on the back or limbs, may grow downwards and spread into the deeper tissue.
