The Platypus

Platypuses live in eastern Australia.

When a platypus is born, it's only the size of a lima bean.

Platypuses are carnivores.

Platypuses live in dirt burrows that they dig at the water's edge.

They use electroreception to find their food underwater.

They used to be hunted for their fur, but now they're a protected species.

Platypuses don't have teeth, so they mix gravel with their food to help them chew.

When platypuses were first discovered, scientists thought they were a hoax.

Females incubate their eggs between their rump and tail for two weeks.

Baby platypuses have molars in the back of their jaws that eventually fall out and are replaced with grinding pads.

Platypuses were also introduced by humans to Kangaroo Island, which is right by Australia.

Platypuses lay eggs instead of giving live birth.

Like echidnas, platypuses are monotremes.

Platypuses are nocturnal, unless it's a cloudy day.

Owls are one of the platypuses natural predators.

Platypuses have pouches in their cheeks to carry their food.

Even though they have bills like a duck, platypuses don't quack.

The webbing on their feet retracts to allow them to run.
