On an early morning in a first grade classroom, Ms. Kidwell was very excited.
"Today in social studies, we are going to learn about our national symbols!"

"Oh brother," thought Jessica. "I do not like social studies. I am not in the mood for this today."
Feeling extra sleepy that day, Jessica rested her head for a minute and dozed off.

When Jessica woke up, she was somewhere she was not familiar with. It looked as if she had woken up in the past--hundreds of years ago! She knew for sure when she saw someone she recognized.
"Hi, I'm George Washington. You may recognize me from the one dollar bill. I heard you were not interested in Ms. Kidwell's lesson about national symbols, but I am here to show you how exciting it can be."

7
"I, myself, am a national symbol of this country because I was the first president of the United States. I was born in Virginia and was president for eight years."
"Something you may not know about me, is that I had terrible toothaches. Often times, I would have them pulled out and replaced with fake teeth made out of ivory."
8

9
Mathematical Task #1
George Washington had 32 teeth. One day, he had a bad toothache. He went to the dentist, who pulled out 10 of his teeth, and replaced them with fake ones. How many real teeth did George Washington have left?

"Now enough about me, there is much to learn. This is my friend, Abraham Lincoln," George Washington explained.
"Hello, Jessica. My name is Abraham Lincoln and I would love to tell you a bit about myself," said Lincoln.
Jessica could not believe her eyes.
12

13
Jessica listened eagerly as Abraham Lincoln spoke.
"I was the sixteenth president of the United States. I was born in a log cabin and served as president during the American Civil War. My favorite thing to wear was a very tall hat. Something you may not know about me, is that sometimes, I liked to keep money inside of it!"
14

15
Mathematical Task #2
One morning, Abraham Lincoln woke up very hungry for some breakfast. He put 20 dollars into his hat, and went to the market to buy some food. After buying a loaf of bread and some cheese, he had spent 8 dollars. How many dollars did he have left?
16

17
"Wow," said Jessica. "There are so many things I didn't know about you guys."
"Now that you know us a little better, there is one more thing we'd like to tell you about that is very important to the United States. But this time, it isn't about a person."
Jessica was not expecting that. She wondered what it could be.
