There once was a time in our history
When it did not feel like the land of the free.
Children were denied rights to equal education
And the country was plagued by discrimination.
3
In a sea of injustice and a time of despair,
Several heroes stood up against what was unfair.
Even with danger ahead, they made the choice
To speak up and defend those who were given no voice.

Rosa Parks was one of these freedom pioneers,
She started a movement, 1955 was the year.
She was tired of the way that people were treated,
So when told to stand up on the bus, she remained seated.
7
After being arrested and fined, she still stood her ground,
And later that day, several leaders gathered ‘round.
They planned the bus boycott that lasted over a year
And Ms. Parks became a symbol of courage in a time of fear.

Math Check #1
The Montgomery bus boycott lasted 381 days and many African Americans ended up commuting on foot during this time. Let’s say that a man named William worked part-time as a clerk 2 miles up the road. How many miles did William walk, in total, if the amount of days that he worked equaled 2/3 the span of the boycott? Remember that each day William worked, he had to walk to the office AND walk back home.

People of all ages put their hearts on the line,
Like the group of students known as the Little Rock Nine.
They were chosen by the NAACP
To attend Central High despite controversy.
11
Surrounded by soldiers in their quest to integrate,
They faced yelling, name-calling, and more forms of hate.
Even though tensions grew high in this part of our nation,
The Little Rock Nine paved the way towards desegregation.

Math Check #2
Ernest Green was the first of the Little Rock Nine to graduate from Central High School. The graduation took place on May 27th, 1958. Four years later, he graduated college with a Bachelor’s degree in social science. Two years after that, he received his Master’s degree in sociology. Forty seven years later, the University of Arkansas awarded him an honorary doctorate. What year did Mr. Ernest Green receive his doctorate?

When looking at the influential civil rights activists,
Martin Luther King, Jr. would be at the top of the list,
From his famous speeches to his organization
Of the March on Washington to push legislation.
15
King met with the President and at long last,
1964 became the year that Civil Rights Act was passed.
Though such a long way to go, freedom started to rise
Along the way, MLK received the Noble Peace Prize.

Math Check #3
On August 28th, 1963 in Washington D.C., Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream Speech.” This speech was filled with rhetoric, allusions, and purposeful repetition that reached the ears of the audience of over 250,000 supporters. It was 17 minutes long. How long was this speech in seconds?
18
While his life was cut short,
he was not truly gone,
For the power of his words
allowed his dream to live on.....
19
“If you can’t fly then run,
If you can’t run then walk,
If you can’t walk then crawl,
But whatever you do
You have to
keep moving forward”
-Martin Luther King, Jr
