Beep! Beep! Beep! As drool seeped from her mouth, Sophie sleepily hit her alarm. It was 5:30 in the morning. Now if you think that's the bad part, wait until you hear this: It was Sophie's very first day of MIDDLE SCHOOL! So naturally, after just fifteen more minutes of beauty sleep, Sophie, startled, jumped from her bed at the realization that this day had finally come. I am a 6th grader today, Sophie thought to herself.

2
Now, as with everything, Sophie had a choice to make. Always accompanied by Positive and Negative, Sophie did what she could to psych herself up for the biggest day of her life so far. Positive spoke loudly into Sophie's ear-loudly but nice, like a cheerleader. "You've got this, Soph! You have the cutest outfit ever to wear, you'll meet up with your friends at the main entrance and who knows? You may just find out that your teachers are wicked cool!"
3

"Then again", Negative whispered in a super creepy, dark, low voice, "You did love your 5th grade teachers. Things can really only get worse. You'll have lockers to open, new people to meet, halls to navigate and just think: gym locker rooms. Ewe. How are you ever going to put deoderant on in front of the other girls? So gross."
4
With Positive and Negative in her head, Sophie was sure to have a first day filled with mixed emotions. She did her best to focus on what Positive had told her, but couldn't help but worry about all that could go wrong.

5
By the time Sophie got dressed, brushed her teeth and did all she had to do to get ready for the day, she barely had time for breakfast. Sophie's mom annoyingly asked her how she was feeling, took the "First day of 6th grade!" photo and off they were to Washington Middle School: The school where dreams are made. Okay, that last part wasn't really true, but at this point, Sophie was thinking what she could to stay positive.

6
The moment had come. The school was in sight. Suddenly, thanks to Negative, Sophie began second-guessing everything from her hair and her outfit to whether she really was well enough to go to school today.
As she sat in the car, staring, she noticed kids getting off buses, being dropped off by parents, some walking and others riding their bikes. This school was so much bigger than her elementary school.

7
Negative nagged at her over and over again. "How do you think you're ever going to find your way around here? And friends? Forget them. The girls here all look so much more put-together than you do."

"Oh Soph! This is the day! Your big day! Say goodbye to elementary school! I am so excited that we are finally here! Everyone looks a little nervous-and that's okay! Look at all the teachers around. I bet they will help you if you need anything. Oh Soph, you've got this, girl!"
8
Sophie did her best to brush aside her feelings, pull herself together, and do what she had to do: Enter the big front doors of Washington Middle School as a 6th grader for the very first time in her life.
She quickly said goodbye to her mom, which, of course, involved a quick selfie for her mom's Instagram page with #howcuteismySophie?! and headed off for what could potentially be the best or worst day of her life. Ever.
9
When the morning bell rang, Sophie walked herself through the big front doors. She felt alone but she was actually among a group of other 6th graders, but none she had been in 5th grade with.
She followed the crowd and made her way to the 6-2 hallway. She knew that was her hallway because of the back to school letter she had received in the summer.
10
Sophie saw teachers standing around everywhere in the hallway, talking with and helping students. She thought they looked really nice because they were all smiling.
"Your teachers are going to be awesome!" Positive encouraged. "Not so fast, Soph. You don't know these teachers from the man on the moom. They could have evil plots to make your first day miserable!" Negative snickered.

11
One of the teachers came up to Sophie. She introduced herself and asked Sophie if she needed any help. Sophie said she wanted help finding her locker. The teacher, Mrs. Rothert, helped her find her locker number. Next to her locker there were two other students, one on each side. One of the other girls said hi and the other one smiled. So far, Sophie thought, things are going bright.

12
Another bell rang and Sophie could hear the teachers calling student's names. She heard her name and went with the teacher, Mrs. Graham. As she walked into the room, she saw a couple of boys and a handful of girls that she recognized from 5th grade. Sophie felt a sense of relief and sat at a table with them.
Mrs. Graham went over the schedule and had the class do a team-building exercise.
13
The class flew by and it was time to transition to another class. Sophie had to go back to her locker during passing time to get a notebook. However, she struggled to get the lock open.
"And you thought things were going well. Come on, Soph. 6th grade isn't for you. You are not good at getting your locker open" declared Negative into Sophie's fragile heart.
