Mitchell Street was always a creepy neighborhood. There were only three houses on the short block. Old Man John occupied one of the houses at 4627 Mitchell St.
All the neighbors and kids on the other streets knew "Old Man John" was a retired veteran of World War II, a divorcee, and that he always stayed to himself.

The children from other street were playing in front of "Old Man John" house when one of the kids threw the ball too far making its way into his backyard.
The children knew of him and heard different rumors that he was mean and rude. They all stood and debated on who would go up and knock on the door. Until finally the boy in the blue worked the nerve up to knock on the door.

"Old Man John" opened the door with his arm wrapped snug around the pink and green ball. He then parted his lips to ask if that was the boy's ball followed by him asking the boy's name.
"What's your name?", asked "Old Man John".
The boy stood there hesitantly eyeballing the old man, but then replied, "Luke".

The other children stood outside huddled together as if they were cold shuffling different "what if" questions and suspicions.
They didn't know whether to leave or stay and wait for their friend. They all became suspicious and worried.

Back inside, "Old Man John" began talking and started telling Luke about his life.
"Did you know I immigrated from Russia at just the age of 13? My parents had died and I didn't have any other family. And I had to make a life for myself somehow. I enlisted into World War II at just the young age of 18."
A confused Luke asked, "How long did you spend in the military?"
"Quite a while, actually 20 something years. That's when I met my beautiful wife Louann Smith. We were in love. We only knew each other a short while before getting married in the spring of 1942."

Old Man John and Luke by then had taken a seat on his couch and Luke couldn't help but want to hear more.
"What was it like during that time?", Luke asked with his bugged eyes.
Old Man John sighed," Well, during that time we were living in poverty and racism was just getting started down in the southern states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. People were bullied because of their skin color and African Americans weren't allowed to use the same restroom as others.
