The road to independence began with the crowning of King George III. The colonists had a rude awakening with this new ruler. King George III was planning to become more controlling of the colonies, and the colonists were not happy with this.

2

My polices must go!
Taxation without representation!
King George III created policies in the colonies that the colonists themselves had no say in. He created laws on trade and even imposed taxes on the colonists.
3

Britain wins a war in France yet finds themselves in deep debt due to this. In order to pay for the war, Britain comes up with the idea to more heavily tax the colonies in order to get more money from them. Obviously, the colonists are not too fond of this idea.
4

Soon after taxes such as The Stamp act were passed, MORE rules and regulations were placed on the colonists. Britain did things such as close the Boston Harbor. This not only angered the colonists but also threatened their government. They began to retaliate.
5

Common Sense
Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense in attempt to band the colonists together. It made valid points in arguing that monarchy was corrupt and that King George was an enemy to the colonists' freedom. The colonists were heavily influenced by this document.
6

Nope, bye, get outta here!
The colonists soon created the First Continental Congress. This was one of the first British resistance groups. This Congress' first major decision was to impose an embargo on the British and prohibit all trade.
7

The Second Continental Congress was formed a year later. This Congress assumed the power of a central government by electing a president as well as created an army. This Congress separated the colonists from Britain by establishing their own national government.
8

Congress finally decided to formally break away from Britain in 1776. They did this through The Declaration of Independence which was later adopted on July 4th, 1776.
