His invention allowed cotton to become a profitable trade for southern

Eli was a busy man! He also developed the idea of interchangeable parts in
1850. This allowed easy and cheap replacement for broken parts of a machine.
It encouraged the development of mass production and the growth of
factories in the North.7

Here is Elias Howe. He invented the sewing machine in 1845. The
machine made sewing at least 5 times faster than it was with hand
sewing. It allowed textiles to be made and sold for a profit,
increasing the trade of items such as clothes and books. 8

Look! More of my friends have made it to the party! I would like
you to meet Samuel Morse, John Deere, and Cyrus McCormick.
They too have made significant contributions to the growth of America. 9
