Bikes in the 1800s
A man named Karl Drais in 1817 invented the "running machine" also known as the velocipede. This was a bike that was made of all wood, these first bikes did not have pedals so the riding style was vastly different from today. The design of this bike was the first to show the two wheel concept we see today.
Later on in 1863 a new type of bicycle was introduced, this bike was called the "Boneshaker". They had cobblestone roads in that day so when this stiff bike with steel wheels would go over pathways it was an actual bone shaker. This bike was a big improvment in the fact that it was the first to use pedals.

Improvement continues

In 1870 the "high wheeler" was introduced, this metal bike had a larger front wheel this was said to create a much smoother ride. This bike was the first to actually be referred to as a bicycle. This bike was popular because
you could travle long distances with
it but it came at a price.. falling off
of this bike results in what we now
refer to as "taking a header".
The "Safety bike" was introduced in 1890. This bike has many improvements to it such as two of the same sized wheels and it is the first bike to have a chain and the pedals that aren't connected to the front of the bike. Was an uncomfurtable ride.

Bikes today
Bikes now a days have changed a lot from the 1800's. now there are many different types of bikes, but they all generally follow the same design. Most modern day bikes have 2 of the same sized wheels and a chain with pedals.
