nce upon a time, there was a mighty kingdom at war with itself. Nobles began fighting each other after the old king, King Uther, died. The wizard, Merlin, told the people that someone needed to pull the sword from the stone to become the new king.

any people tried to pull the sword out, but none prevailed. The kingdom went many years without a ruler. Sir Ector, and his son, Sir Kay, had gone out to fight in a jousting match, but Sir Kay had left his sword at home. He asked Arthur to fetch it for him. When Arthur could not get into the house to find the sword, he rode to fetch the sword in the stone to bring back to Sir Kay, so that Sir Ector would not be disappointed in him. Arthur thought nothing of it as he pulled the sword out with ease, and rode back to bring it to Sir Kay.

ir Kay saw the sword and told everyone he had pulled it out of the stone so that he could be the ruler. But when they went to go show others, he admitted that Arthur had given it to him. No one believed that Arthur had pulled out the sword, and they put it back in the stone. Once again, Arthur was the only one able to pull the sword out. Sir Kay and Sir Ector knelt to him.

I didn't pull the sword out. Arthur did.
