Jack, who was approaching seven years old, wanted nothing more for his birthday
then a pair of ballet slippers.
When Mama came home
from work one night carrying a
strange package, Jack new exactly
what they were, and he
was ecstatic!

Jack wore his new slippers everywhere. He wore them to bed.
He wore them to church. He even wore them to school!
And wherever he went, he was always dancing!

His friends, however, did not approve.
They mocked him relentlessly.
"Only girls can be ballet dancers!"
they cried.

Tearful, he ran home to Mama. "The other children said I can't be a
dancer because I'm a boy,"
he sobbed!

"Hush, child. That's fool talk," Mama said.
"You can be whatever you want to be, as long as you practice. Don't let life
get you down."

So jack took his ballet slippersand he practiced,
and practiced,
and practiced.

His friends continued to tease him,but he didn't listen to them this time.
He just kept right on dancing.

Many years later, when Jack was all grown up and a professional dancer,
he paced the floor anxiously.
It was opening night, and Jack was
nervous.

The curtains opened and Jacksaw all his friends in the
audience, cheering him on.
