I was very hungry but as the months went on I learned how to deal with it. I've been living in the Warsaw Ghetto for three years now. It's been 3 years since I've had a comfortable bed to sleep in and to play with a toy when we had to sell them for food. The soldiers had started taking people away but to where I don't know. My friend Leo thinks they are taking them far away. Sometimes me and Leo pretend that we are American soldiers saving everybody from here.

I heard my mom and my dad talking one night. When I tried to listen they called my name. When I came in I could see the frightened face of my mom. My dad told me the whole plan we would hide in a bunker with other families as many of our dads would go fight. The next day I brought my cat Simon with me as me and my mom went to hide with the other families in the bunker. I was so relieved to see my friend Leo their in the bunker with his mom we all held each other close as we heard the sound of fighting above us.

As the fighting went on the plan was after the three days of fighting dad would come back and we would go through the sewage canals to escape. When our dad came and said it's time to leave we said our goodbyes and crawled down to the sewage canal. I was very happy because finally I could live free.

Author's Note

As though the characters in the story were fake the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is all real events. On April 19, 1943 fighting began as a result of recent deportations of many Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto. The Jewish Resistance of ZOB and ZZW members fought against the SS officers. SS officer Brigadeführer Jürgen Stroop then ordered the burning of the ghetto. As in the story not many people escaped during the fighting. There were rare cases for people like the main character's family who had made it out of the ghetto through sewage canals. This was the end of the Warsaw Ghetto after the resistance movement.
