I dedicate this book to my good friend Maggie who has Autism. This book is for all children, but it is specifically geared toward children with special needs. It helps children understand Autism a little better, and lets children know that there are other kids out there who have Autism, too. They are not alone.

This will be a different children's book from the ones you are normally used to reading. It is all about me and my brother, and how we are different from other little kids our age.
My name is Sam and I am now 14. My brother, Tom, is 12. I decided to write this story now, hopefully helping others who are struggling with disabilities.

Tom and I started out life like any other kids. When mom and dad brought me home from the hospital 14 years ago, it was the most magical moment of their lives, they have said. I was a normal infant, eating, crying, pooping, smiling... in other words, doing exactly what I should be doing!

When I was a little over a year old, my mom became pregnant with my little brother. As the months passed, my parents became increasingly concerned, as I was not hitting the milestones that all the books said I should be. After many visits to the doctors and specialists, it was determined I had a high-functioning form of autism, called Asperger's Syndrome.

My parents gained as much information as they could about Asperger's Syndrome, wanting to give me the best possible life that they could. When Tom was born six months later, it was immediately obvious that he was unique, too. He was diagnosed with a mild version of Autism.

What is Mild Autism?
It is when an individual is clearly autistic, but also has significant spoken language and other skills. (Rudy, 2016) Children may have advanced communication skills and might do great in school, but they may be very behind with their social skills and organizational skills. They may also have severe sensory issues.

Is Learning in School Harder for a Child with Asperger's Syndrome than Without?
A lot of children with Asperger's Disease are very bright and do very well academically in school. What they struggle with is their social and emotional competency. Children succeed best in a classroom that is predictable and structured with as few transitions as possible. (Little Professor, 2017) With unstructured activities, such as lunch and outside time, a child with Asperger's may need special accommodations.
How are the Potty Training Patterns Impacted by Children with Special Needs Cultural Norm?
A child with Autism has more obstacles with potty training than a child without. Many do not like the idea of potty training, because it was your idea. Expressive language is a problem for children with Autism. They have a hard time associating words with actions, so it is important to teach children ways to use the bathroom when they need to go.
Since children have issues with sensory, such as smells, texture, temperature, tastes, and sounds, they might have an issue going into a bathroom that smells bad and throw a tantrum. Some children might not like certain colors or textures in the bathroom or might not like the sound of the toilet flushing. These are all things you need to be aware of before sending your autistic child into a bathroom. (Autism-Help, 2008)
